Project Management Certificate Programs in Virginia
Most project management certificate programs are specifically designed to meet the standards set forth by the Project Management Institute (PMI), which is an internationally recognized nonprofit institution that offers six different certifications. The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is the most popular option, though many students may wish to obtain one of the other certifications for specific positions. All PMI certifications are internationally accredited, transferable across national borders and earned by passing an exam. Most certificate programs prepare students to sit for one of the PMI exams. There are currently eight non-profit schools in Virginia offering certificate programs in project management.
George Mason University
Located in Fairfax, George Mason University offers prospective students a comprehensive certificate of completion in project management. The program consists of four core courses and one elective course. Students are trained to create, execute, manage and complete different types of professional projects before moving on to in-depth studies. All students are given 18 months to complete the program. The school guarantees that any student who completes the program will not only be eligible to sit for the PMP exam, but they will pass it. Students who do not pass the exam can retake the university's PMP Exam Prep course for free.
Arlington-based Marymount University has a graduate certificate program in project management. Students are taught to solve business challenges through the management of finances, employees and technologies. Prospective students are required to have at least three years of management experience and meet the school's graduate-level academic standards. The program consists of six courses for a total of 18 credits, including the option of taking a law or IT course in lieu of the final management-based course. All students must earn a grade of B- or higher in all six courses to earn the certificate. This program does not directly prepare students to take any of the PMI certification exams.
Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA)
NOVA is located in Annandale. The university's project management certificate focuses on several key process areas of the field, including integration, procurement and cost. The program requires students to complete six courses and pass an exam to earn the certificate. Course topics include quality, risk and change and dynamic team management. Students receive an individual certificate for each course completed with an attendance record of at least 90%. Each course may also be used to maintain a previous credential by earning Professional Development Units (PDUs) for PMP recertification.
Tidewater Community College (TCC)
Suffolk's TCC offers a one-course program specifically designed to help students pass the PMP certification exam. The 35-hour program meets the official training requirements of the PMI and includes a PMI membership and the cost of the exam in the tuition. At the end of the program, students receive a 35-hour PDU certificate.
University of Richmond
Located in the city of Richmond, the University of Richmond offers a project management series certificate program made up of four courses that may be taken as standalone workshops. To earn the certificate, students must complete the strategic project, risk project and advanced project management courses, as well as an elective chosen among five courses, such as budget/cost management and business analytics. Each course has its own tuition cost, but a 10% discount is given when students register for all four classes. The program does not prepare students to sit for the PMP exam or any other PMI certification exams.

Graduates of the program are prepared to sit for the PMP exam and the PMI's Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) exam. Students are also trained to understand and procure project contracts and to use Microsoft Project software. The advanced practitioner's certificate is designed for managers already working in a variety of industries and organizations. It includes four core courses along with two elective courses and provides students with the 60 PDUs needed to maintain the PMP certification.
Virginia State University (VSU)
