Public Health Programs in Colorado

Students who want to study public health in Colorado can choose from roughly 4 colleges and universities. Only 1 of these schools offers a degree program at the undergraduate level. Colorado State University - Ft. Collins

The Ft. Collins campus of CSU has a branch of the Colorado School of Public Health (CSPH), which is a collaborative school combining the resources of CSU, the University of Colorado and the University of Northern Colorado. Each university has various degree program offerings and concentrations, and this campus offers a Master of Public Health degree program. Students in this program can choose from concentrations in animals, people and the environment; environmental and occupational health; epidemiology; global health and health disparities; public health nutrition; health communication; and physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Before applying to the program, students must first earn bachelor's degrees with sufficient GPAs, take the GRE and complete personal essays. Once accepted, students can expect to complete 42 credits in about 2 years of full-time study. Regardless of concentration, all MPH students complete certain classes that may cover epidemiology, biostatistics and healthcare policy. Additionally, each student must participate in a practicum and complete a capstone project. A joint degree program that results in a Master of Public Health degree and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is also available.

Ft. Lewis College

In Durango, students can attend FLC to study public health at the undergraduate level. The school has a minor and bachelor's program in the field. To complete the minor, students must earn 17 credits by taking classes in statistics, public health foundations, epidemiology, human diseases, substance abuse and community health behavioral factors.

The bachelor's program offers concentrations in allied health, media, Native American health, public health practice and psychosocial. A total of 120 credits are necessary to finish the degree program, which includes required classes for all public health majors: statistics, algebra, ecological health, epidemiology, research methods, public health foundations and human diseases. Additionally, majors must take a class covering Global Positioning Systems mapping.

University of Colorado - Denver

The Denver-based campus of UC is home to the university's division of the CSPH. Of the 3 schools making up the CSPH, this school has the most extensive options for public health programs. A certificate program in global public health is available to students who want to take graduate level classes covering complex health problems affecting the global population, such as HIV/AIDS, famine and contagious diseases. The Master of Public Health program is available with concentrations in applied biostatistics; community and behavioral health; environmental and occupational health; epidemiology; health services research; health systems, management and policy; and maternal and child health. All 3 universities in the Colorado School of Public Health employ the same guidelines for the MPH program; students must complete 42 credits that include required and concentration courses, a practicum and a capstone project.

Joint degree programs are also available here. Students can earn Master of Public Health degrees while also earning graduate degrees in areas of veterinary medicine, urban and regional planning, medicine or public administration. At the doctoral level, students can earn a Doctor of Public Health degree. The program prepares graduates for careers as researchers, healthcare policy-makers and practitioners. Students can choose to focus on either community and behavioral health or epidemiology. Students finish the 67-credit program by completing coursework, a seminar, a practicum and a dissertation.

University of Northern Colorado

Individuals in Greeley can take advantage of the Colorado School of Public Health by enrolling at this university. Here, students can earn a Certificate in Public Health Sciences and/or a Master of Public Health in Community Health Education degree. The certificate program allows students to take graduate-level classes without having to enroll in a master's program. To be considered for admission, students must submit their transcripts, a recommendation letter and a resume. Students can complete the program by earning 15 credits; required classes include biostatistics, epidemiology and public health basics.

The Master of Public Health program has the same standard admission and curricular guidelines as the MPH programs offered at CSU and UC-D. However, the community health education concentration may teach students to educate the public about a wide range of health conditions and health promotion. Some of the concentration classes may include health promotion methods, research methods and health program development.
