Information about Quality Control and Safety

The products consumers buy are usually tested to ensure safety and quality. Quality control and safety experts maintain a company's trust by making sure only the best products leave the manufacturing floor. Inspectors personally inspect products as they move along the assembly line and as they are being prepared to be shipped to stores. Quality control keeps contaminated medicine off the counters, bad food cans off of the shelves, and unsafe cars off of the modeling floors. For every good product, there is a quality control and safety expert working behind the scenes. To be effective, quality control and safety experts must learn about the products they judge. Size, weight and other specifications must be strictly adhered to. They also need to be aware of all of the rules and regulations placed by the government to control products leaving the production floor.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics at www.bls.gov, training requirements vary, based on the responsibilities of the product inspector, sorter, sampler, tester, or weigher. For workers performing simple 'pass/fail' tests of products, high school diplomas are usually sufficient. For more complex positions in quality control and safety, workers need previous training and experience in areas such as statistical process control, new automation, and the particular company's quality assurance policies. With increasingly evolving technology, it has become essential that these professionals learn computer skills in order to operate automated inspection equipment. Other crucial skills employers in this field look for are mechanical aptitude, mathematics and communication skills, and good vision and hand/eye coordination.
