Radiation Therapy Schools in Florida
Radiation therapists must be licensed to work in the state of Florida. To be eligible, students must complete an accredited radiation therapy program and earn certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), which requires passing an exam.
Only three Florida schools provide training in radiation therapy, and all three programs meet certification requirements set by ARRT. These schools are profiled below.
Florida State College at Jacksonville
Florida State College at Jacksonville offers a radiation therapy associate's degree program and a certificate program. The programs accept new students every two years, in even numbered years. The 43-credit-hour certificate program is available only to applicants who are registered with the ARRT as a radiologic technologist or nuclear medicine technologist. Applicants to either program must have a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card. While most Associate of Science programs offer terminal degrees, Florida State College's radiation therapist associate's degree program is transferable to some bachelor's degree programs. Courses include oncology, radiographic physics and clinical education.
Hillsborough Community College
Hillsborough Community College's Department of Health Science offers two radiation therapy programs at the Dale Mabry Campus in Tampa. The school offers a 77-credit associate's degree program and a 43-credit certificate program for applicants who have previously completed a radiography program and are certified by ARRT. Within the programs, students complete simulation lecture and laboratory courses, as well as three radiation therapy clinics. Applicants to the associate's degree program must have fulfilled prerequisite courses in physiology and anatomy. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) approves both programs.
Keiser University - Fort Lauderdale
The Fort Lauderdale campus of Keiser University offers an associate's degree and a post-associate's certificate program in radiation therapy. Applicants to the 54-credit-hour certificate program must have an associate's degree in radiologic technology. The curriculum includes coursework in patient care, oncology, principles and practice, and quality management, as well as six levels of clinical education. The associate's degree program is 93 credit hours. In addition to general education courses, this program focuses heavily on radiation therapy physics, practices and clinical practice.
