Essential Information

In the state of Michigan, there are a good number of schools offering radiology coursework, and most of these programs prepare students to become radiologic technologists, also known as radiographers. Available programs related to radiology in the state lead to the award of primarily associate's degree, however, there is one school that offers a bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree in the field. All radiology programs include the opportunity to work with real patients with learned technology, achieved through practicum or clinical requirements under supervision.

Career Requirements

Most people obtain radiology training to pursue careers in the medical field, and potential career titles may include radiologist, radiologist assistant, or radiologic technologist. Each career field requires a different amount of education, training, licensing, and certification, in accordance with state laws and guidelines.

Baker College of Clinton Township

The Clinton Township campus offers an associate degree program in radiologic technology. After completing the associate degree program, students are eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam, which is a nationally recognized credential within this career field. Required courses for this degree program include human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, radiographic positioning, general imaging and radiographic protection. Students will also participate in at least three clinical courses that allow students to practice with real patients.

Baker College of Muskegon

The radiologic technology associate degree program at the Muskegon campus is identical to the one offered at the Clinton Township campus. The main difference between campuses, however, is that the Muskegon campus is located in a much smaller city. Nevertheless, completing the associate degree program at this location will still make students eligible for the ARRT certification exams. There may be less clinical training options offered at this campus as compared to the Clinton Township campus, since the Clinton Township campus is located in a larger area with more medical facilities available. With the exception of different faculty members, coursework topics remain the same.

Delta College

University Center's campus offers an associate degree program in radiography. Completion of the associate degree program will make students eligible to sit for the ARRT certification exams. This campus only accepts 18 students each semester, and students are responsible for purchasing additional equipment, including scrubs, shoes and name tags. Students must also have their own transportation to attend required clinical training sessions. Course topics for this degree program cover medical imaging, radiographic exposure, patient care, radiographic procedures, safety concerns, imaging equipment and radiologic pharmacology. Students must also complete seven clinical courses throughout the degree program.

Ferris State University

Located in Big Rapids, this university has an associate degree program in radiography. The program consists of six semesters of coursework, including classes in radiography procedures, imaging, radiography protection, quality assessment, radiography pharmacology, imaging equipment and medical terminology. Students are required to complete a year-long internship, which will require students to work 40 hours per week at designated facilities. Available internships are limited, and not all students get their top choices of internship locations. Furthermore, internship shifts may vary, and students are required to work two weekend shifts each semester as well as two weeks' worth of afternoon shifts.

Kellogg Community College

At this college in Battle Creek, students can enroll in the radiography associate degree program. Course topics include patient care, radiologic positioning, radiologic pathology, cross-sectional anatomy, imaging technology and radiologic physics. Students are required to pass at least five clinical training courses throughout the degree program to graduate. To be eligible for required clinical training courses, students may have to submit to background checks and drug screenings. Completion of this degree program makes students eligible to sit for the ARRT exams.

Mid Michigan Community College

The Harrison campus has an associate degree program in radiography. The six-semester program prepares students for taking the ARRT exams and for finding employment. Before starting radiography coursework, students must complete prerequisite classes, which include anatomy and physiology, mathematics, chemistry and medical terminology. Radiography courses cover such topics as radiation physics, radiologic techniques, quality assurance, radiologic positioning and radiographic exposure. During the second year of the degree program, students will spend an average of 32 hours each week in clinical training, and students must complete 50 weeks' worth of clinicals to graduate.

Mott Community College

Flint's campus offers an associate degree program in radiologic technology, and the campus runs this degree program in association with the Hurley Medical Center, which is where students will complete their clinical training sessions. Prior to enrolling in the degree program, students must complete their general education and prerequisite requirements. Students may also have to pass background checks and drug screenings to be eligible for clinical training. According to the Hurley Medical Center student handbook, required courses include patient care, film evaluation, imaging, radiologic pathology, image positioning and radiologic physics. During the two-year program, students will receive instruction from four faculty members at the medical center, and each student must complete a total of 1,568 clock hours of clinical experience.

Oakland Community College

This community college in Bloomfield Hills has an associate degree program in radiologic technology. Students must complete supportive coursework before being admitted into the program, and such coursework may include human anatomy and physiology, medical law and ethics, psychology, professional communication, medical terminology and computer literacy. Another prerequisite requirement includes passing a drug screening and criminal background check. Radiologic technology course topics cover radiation physics, radiographic procedures, exposure quality, radiation protection and radiologic pathology. Students are required to complete five clinical sessions for this degree program. By completing this degree program, students will be eligible to sit for the ARRT exams.

Washtenaw Community College

Located in Ann Arbor, this college offers an associate degree program in radiography. Only a small number of students are accepted into the program every spring, and accepted students must meet several post-admission requirements, which include having medical insurance, passing a criminal background check, getting a physical, becoming CPR certified and showing proof of recent immunizations. Radiography course topics cover such areas as patient care, radiographic positioning, radiation protection, radiography pathology, sectional anatomy and radiography quality assurance. During the seven-semester program, students must complete six clinical sessions. This degree program does prepare students to take the ARRT exams.

Wayne State University

The Detroit campus of this university has undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the field of radiology. As of 2013, the school offered a bachelor's degree program in radiologic technology, a radiologist assistant (RA) master's degree program, a master's degree program in radiological physics and a doctor of philosophy degree in medical physics with a radiological emphasis. Students who complete either the bachelor's degree program or the RA master's degree program are eligible to sit for the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) certification exams. Coursework topics in the bachelor's degree program include radiographic procedures, patient care, radiation physics, jurisprudence and health sciences pharmacology. Prior to enrollment in the RA program, applicants must be experienced radiographers who are ARRT certified. RA students take courses in patient assessment, imaging physics, cross-sectional anatomy and radiological procedures. Students interested in the radiological physics graduate degree program can choose to earn either a master's or doctorate degree, although the doctorate degree would be in the broader field of medical physics. Radiological physics topics include radiation safety, magnetic resonance, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology. All degree programs require students to complete supervised clinical education hours, which allow students to perform radiological procedures on a full range of patients.
