Real Estate Classes in New Jersey

The state of New Jersey requires any individual interested in a career as a real estate salesperson to complete a prelicensure course at an accredited institution and then pass the license exam upon completion of the prelicensure course. Over 80 different colleges and universities are accredited by the state to administer the pre-licensing course; some universities also offer advanced degree programs in real estate for individuals looking to advance their education further. Below are short overviews of ten of the largest real estate schools in New Jersey; a comparison table providing specific degree programs and tuition information is also included.

Atlantic Cape Community College

Atlantic Cape Community College offers certificates and 2-year degree programs to students of the Mays Landing area on the southern tip of the state. Among those programs are courses in real estate sales pre-licensing and real estate brokering. The pre-licensing program is designed for students who are interested in breaking into the real estate profession and covers the basics of real estate sales, including municipal and state laws and business opportunity sales. The broker licensing course consists of 90 hours and entrants into the program must have been employed as a licensed real estate salesperson in the state for the last three years.

Bergen Community College

Over 17,200 students attend classes at the Paramus campus of Bergen Community College, a 2-year, public institution. The school offers continuing education courses in real estate, training students in the information they need to pass the state Real Estate Licensing Examination. A 75-hour training course in real estate salesperson's licensing trains students for the law, transaction and regulatory aspects of real estate careers. A 60-hour appraisal training course, on the other hand, teaches individuals the basics of ownership rights, housing designs and market income.

Brookdale Community College

Brookdale Community College offers certificate and associate's programs through its Lincroft campus, including a professional development course in real estate principles and practices. This 75-hour training course consists of 22 sessions and is recommended for property owners, prospective property buyers and sellers and salespeople. Successful completion of the course allows individuals to take the New Jersey Real Estate Examination.

Essex County College

Founded in 1966 in Newark, Essex County College offers a certificate program in principles of real estate sales for interested students. Individuals enrolled in the 20-session program learn about mortgage sales agreements, title closing and property rights and interests, among other topics. A high school diploma or its equivalent is required for acceptance into the program.

Mercer County Community College

Attended by close to 9,400 students, Mercer County Community College offers 2-year degree and certificate programs through its West Windsor campus, including a certificate program in real estate pre-licensing. This program is specifically designed to aid individuals in passing the New Jersey state real estate salesperson exam and teaches students the basics of New Jersey state real estate law and disclosure regulations. Mercer also provides courses in Real Estate Math Review for individuals studying for the state exam.

Montclair State University

At its School of Business, this 4-year public school located 14 miles from New York City in Montclair offers students an undergraduate degree program focusing on real estate education. This program prepares students for entry into the industry in residential, commercial or industrial real estate. Combining real estate training with solid education in business administration and economics, students also learn advanced skills in areas of legal practices, mortgages, financial markets and technology. The 120-credit curriculum also includes core classes in the sciences, writing, speech, math, history, management, statistics and marketing.

New Jersey City University

A 4-year, public college located in Jersey City, New Jersey City University offers a real estate salesperson's licensing course to prospective students at its waterfront campus. Students are trained in real estate mathematics, agency basics and the regulations of the state Real Estate Commission. The program is 75 hours and entirely takes place on Saturdays.

Seton Hall University

Found 14 miles away from Manhattan in South Orange, Seton Hall was founded in 1856 and is the oldest diocesan university in the United States. The school's Bachelor of Science in Business Administration offers a finance concentration that could be of interest to students looking for a career in real estate. The 128 credit hour program includes 45 credits from the business administration core (accounting, management, marketing, etc.); the finance track of the degree includes mandatory coursework in financial strategy and investment analysis and is designed to enhance students' skills in money management.

Thomas Edison State College

Flexibility at Thomas Edison State College offers adults the opportunity to obtain their degree when it is convenient for their schedule and only visit the campus in Trenton for advising and commencement. Exams and coursework are completed online with credit given for life experiences, prior learning or training and past college coursework. The school's bachelor's program in business administration offers a real estate concentration, which provides a basic principles and practices course, as well as elective studies in real estate appraisal, brokerage, valuation and taxation. All students must complete a capstone project to complete this program. The business administration program in full is 120 credits, with 60 credits required in general education subjects, such as macro and microeconomics, English composition and humanities.

Union County College

A certificate program in real estate sales is available through the four campuses of Union County College, a 2-year, public school headquartered in Cranford. Among the topics the program covers are deeds, title charges and agency relationships; students must earn at least a 70% grade on their final exam in order to pass the course. Already-licensed real estate salespersons in the state can also take additional coursework to satisfy state requirements and further their knowledge through the school's real estate continuing education program.
