Programs at Butler University

The College of Communication at Butler University offers a Creative Media and Entertainment program in which students can learn about video, audio and multimedia production. Students have the opportunity to gain real-world experience as part of the Butler Recording Industry Club. Each year, recording club members find talent, produce a CD and organize live concerts on campus.

Bachelor of Arts in Recording Industry Studies

This 4-year program allows recording arts majors to explore all aspects of the recording industry. Students take courses in media law and business along with classes in sound recording theory, audio production and technology. The curriculum prepares graduates for recording arts careers in music, television and film. Students must complete an independent study and participate in a practicum.

Programs at Indiana University

Students enrolled in Recording Arts Department programs at Indiana University gain hands-on experience by assisting professional crews with the set-up and production of live events at the college.

Associate of Science in Recording Arts

This 60-credit program combines general education with recording arts courses. Students learn about recording technique and theory by taking courses in electronics, production techniques and audio repair. They also take classes in music theory and music listening or literature. Additionally, the program requires completion of a final project, recording arts seminar and internship. Students put their knowledge into practice and apply their skills as part of the campus technical crew.

Bachelor of Science in Recording Arts

This 4-year, 120-credit degree program features the same core curriculum as the associate's degree program, including the internship and crew assignments. However, students have the opportunity to take music-related electives in topics such as music theory and literature, musical skills, rock and roll history and music for film. Students in the bachelor's degree program also can pursue coursework in advanced sound reinforcement and topics in recording arts, in addition to completing a multi-track studio project and digital audio workstation seminar.
