Refrigeration Schools and Colleges in the U.S.
Refrigeration technicians, sometimes referred to as HVACR technicians, install and maintain air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Community colleges, career and technical trade schools offer degree and certificate programs in refrigeration.
How To Select a Refrigeration School
Apprenticeship programs are a key component of gaining the skills to become a refrigeration technician. Therefore, individuals interested in a career as a refrigeration technician should look for schools that offer an apprenticeship program.
When selecting a school, individuals should look for a certificate or associate's program that fits their career goals. Those who want to specialize in a particular area of refrigeration, such as hydronics systems or solar panels, should look for a school that provides the additional training required for specialization.
Whether an individual is pursuing a certificate or degree, it's important to attend an accredited program. HVAC Excellence, the National Center for Construction Education and Research and the Partnership for Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Accreditation are the top three industry organizations that accredit refrigeration training programs.
Because licensure is required in some states, individuals should find out their state laws and look for a program that prepares its students to take the necessary refrigeration licensing exams. Additionally, it is becoming more important for HVACR technicians to have knowledge of environmental regulation laws, as well as experience handling hazardous materials. Finding a school that covers EPA standards for recycling refrigeration fluids and equipment helps prepare an individual for the EPA certification exam.
