Registered nurses are healthcare professionals who assist physicians and treat and educate patients and their families. Information about registered nurse schooling can be found through both independent sources and nursing schools themselves.
Where Can I Find Registered Nurse Schooling Information?
Many accredited universities with medical school programs also have nursing schools. When beginning a search for nursing school information, consider starting at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) (www.bls.gov). According to the BLS, there are three educational paths available for becoming a registered nurse: a bachelor's degree in nursing, an associate's degree in nursing or a nursing diploma. Nursing diplomas are typically offered through in-hospital programs and generally take three years to complete.
While the BLS provides general information, students looking for specific schools can search the database at the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (www.nlnac.org). This organization accredits nursing programs all over the country. When searching for registered nurse schooling, students can select the U.S. state in which they'd like to take their program. Students can also narrow results by program level, institution type and city.
For state-based nursing school searches, a list will be returned featuring each commission-accredited school in the given state. Accreditation standards differ based on the degree level; however, most programs are judged based on degree levels held by faculty and standard curricula.
Registered nurses often choose nursing specialties, such as pediatric nursing or nursing management. When the student has chosen a nursing school, he or she can look into continuing education programs to learn a specialization. A master's degree in a specialization area, for example, may help a registered nurse gain more responsibility and pay within his or her place of work. Students can learn more about these specializations at the BLS website and on the potential school's website. Hospitals that are affiliated with nursing school programs may also provided information about nursing specialties for registered nurses.
