What is the Most Common Respiratory Therapist School Program?
Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy
Under the supervision of physicians, Respiratory Therapists, also known as respiratory care practitioners, treat patients with breathing diseases and disorders, such as asthma, bronchitis, underdeveloped lungs, pneumonia and respiratory distress. Respiratory Therapists work with a wide range of patients, from premature infants to the elderly. The 2-year Associate of Science (A.S.) in Respiratory Therapy degree program is the most common one offered by Respiratory Therapist schools, though some schools also offer a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Respiratory Therapy program. The curriculum in Respiratory Therapist school programs includes a combination of general medical education, respiratory therapy courses and clinical practice. Required coursework may include chemistry, math, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, cardiopulmonary anatomy, cardiopulmonary diagnostics and respiratory care equipment. In clinical practice, Respiratory Therapist school students learn how to conduct diagnostic testing and administer treatments, such as inhaled medications, oxygen, ventilators and chest physiotherapy. Respiratory Therapist school students are usually required to earn and maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification. Most Respiratory Therapist school programs qualify graduates to become Certified Respiratory Therapists (CRT) by passing the exam given by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). All states except Alaska and Hawaii require Respiratory Therapists to earn state licensure.
