In New York City, there are 17 state-approved associate degree programs and 16 state-approved baccalaureate programs for students hoping to train for licensure as a registered nurse (RN). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that, at a minimum, an associate degree is required to sit for licensure in this field. A successful score on the National Council Licensure Examination for RNs is required for work as a registered nurse, and one can enroll in an associate, bachelor's, or non-degree program to prepare for this test. CUNY Borough of Manhattan Community College
Located in Manhattan, this community college is 1 of the 19 schools in the City University of New York (CUNY) system, which aims to provide public education opportunities for the diverse population of this region. BMCC is a historically black college with more than 24,000 students enrolled in its courses and associate degree programs. The nursing department at this school enrolls more than 100 students each year, and it offers day, evening, and weekend courses in its Associate in Applied Science degree program. Coursework in this program includes exposure to topics such as risk-assessment, accurate medication dosage, patient care and communication, professional practices, safety precautions, and infection prevention. The Associate in Applied Science in Nursing is one of 65 programs offered at this school, and it requires 67 units of coursework, which includes introductory pre-clinical classes like English composition and math, and clinical coursework to prepare future nurses for work with patients in various healthcare environments. A pre-assessment of basic skills is also required of introductory nursing students before advancement into upper-level nursing courses.
