Liberty University in Lynchburg
Liberty University is a fundamentalist Baptist school located 40 miles from Roanoke in Lynchburg, Virginia. The university offers programs on campus, as well as online programs, to approximately 48,000 students. It is currently the largest Christian school in the country. Liberty University provides students with 71 different academic majors in English, business, aeronautics, philosophy and religion, worship and music ministry, education, criminal justice and nursing. An additional 36 academic programs are available for distance-learning students.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg
Also called Virginia Tech, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a public, land-grant school located about 27 miles from Roanoke in Blacksburg, Virginia. Founded as a mechanical and agricultural college in the 1870s, the university today provides about 80 bachelor's degree programs and 140 graduate programs in various fields. These fields include architecture, agriculture and life sciences, engineering, natural resources, business, liberal arts, engineering, medicine and veterinary medicine. Virginia Tech is a highly selective school, with an average GPA for incoming freshmen of 3.94.

Radford University
Radford University is a public school situated about 35 miles from Roanoke in the town of Radford. The university offers undergraduate programs in more than 100 areas of study and is currently one of only eight universities in Virginia to provide graduate programs. Degree programs specialize in business, liberal arts and teacher education. Graduate programs are available in medicine, communication, counseling, criminal justice, physical therapy, nursing and more. The student to faculty ratio at Radford University is 19 to 1; the average class size is around 35.
