Sacramento Adult School Options with Education Program Overviews

The Sacramento City Unified School District operates several adult schools in the Sacramento area. These schools provide opportunities for basic education and career or technical training, as well as personal development. Two of these adult education centers are profiled in the following article.

Education Centers and Training Programs

Sacramento residents seeking adult education opportunities have several options to choose from. They can learn a trade, enhance existing skills or even learn to speak and write English. Among the careers adults can train for are:

  • Autobody repair technician
  • Nurse assistant
  • Paramedic
  • Medical coder
  • Chef
  • Cosmetologist

Classes are held at locations throughout the city and are scheduled during the days, evenings and weekends to meet the diverse needs of adult students. Programs can last anywhere from a few months to five years and often include field experiences in addition to classroom training. Two Sacramento adult education centers and their programs are discussed at length below.


Charles A. Jones Career and Education Center

The Charles A. Jones Career and Education Center provides affordable vocational training programs for adult students in over 20 career areas. The center is also an official GED testing site. The six schools within the center offer programs in the areas of court reporting, culinary arts, electronics occupations, office occupations, transportation technology and health science.

Culinary Arts Diploma

Aspiring food service professionals learn about purchasing and receiving, menu planning, regional cuisine, kitchen sanitation, nutrition and leadership concepts while developing culinary skills. Completion of specific courses within the program fulfills the American Culinary Federation certification educational requirements.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certificate

This 6-week program provides the knowledge and skills necessary to become a certified nursing assistant. Students learn theoretical and practical skills through classroom study and clinical experience. Courses include patient care, nutrition, rehabilitative nursing and emergency procedures.

Autobody Repair Certificate

Graduates of this 30-week program are prepared for entry-level careers in the auto body repair field. The program comprises a series of modules covering basic unibody repair, damage repair, refinishing, hazardous material handling and repair estimating.

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Certificate

Aspiring HVAC technicians learn about the fundamental concepts of HVAC systems operation, safety precautions, codes and regulations, tool use, industry terminology and installation procedures for various systems. The program lasts 42 weeks.

Court Reporting Program

This program prepares students for careers as stenographers, captioners, real-time reporters and transcribers. Graduates are eligible for the California Court Reporters Board licensing exam. The program takes between 3-5 years to complete.

Old Marshall Adult Education Center

The mission of this center is to provide educational and employment-related services to adult students in the Sacramento area. In addition to several career training programs, English as a Second Language (ESL) and citizenship classes are also available.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic Training

This program is offered in conjunction with the Sacramento City Fire Department and prepares students for the required certification exams. The EMT program is 14 weeks and covers patient assessment, extraction, emergency care, patient transport, pediatric emergencies and ambulance operation. The paramedic program takes 12 months to complete and also covers EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate training.

Computer Classes

Classes are offered for those in need of general keyboarding skills, as well as for students who are interested in entering the medical profession but lack basic computer training. Classes meet in the evenings at various locations.

Cosmetology and Manicuring Classes

The cosmetologist course consists of 1600 clock hours and prepares students for the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology Licensure exam. The manicurist course, lasting 400 clock hours, concentrates on manicuring skills and prepares students for the California licensure exam for manicurists.

Medical Coding Classes

In preparation for a career as a medical coder, students may take classes in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, ICD-9 coding and CPT codes. The courses are offered in partnership with the University of California Davis Health System.

English as a Second Language Classes

ESL classes are offered at various levels. Students are tested and placed in the appropriate class. In addition to improving their English skills, students learn basic life skills, such as job interview techniques and financial management. Citizenship classes are also available.
