Barber Training in San Diego

Currently, barbering programs in San Diego are only available at for-profit schools. However, the schools discussed below have been approved by the CA Board of Barbering and Cosmetology and qualify graduates for licensure. Prospective students who are not interested in or close to any local schools may want to consider completing an apprenticeship program, which is another way to become a barber in California.

  • The Marinello School of Beauty offers a barbering career training program covering hair care and styling as well as business and safety issues in the industry. The school is about 16 miles from central San Diego.
  • Situated about nine miles from San Diego's downtown area, the Tramy Beauty School offers a 1,500-hour barbering program in a simulated salon setting.

Marinello School of Beauty

Students at Marinello are taught by licensed state board specialists and learn job search techniques. The school has quarterly competitions and gives students opportunities to work at various special events, including beauty pageants, photo shoots and fashion shows.

Barbering Career Training

Some of the topics barbering students learn about include hairstyling, hair coloring, facial massage and salon management. Other courses include rest facials, hair weaving, hair processing, hazardous substances and sales techniques. Graduates of the program have obtained jobs as platform artists, barber shop managers/owners and coloring specialists. Once they've completed the program, graduates can test for CA state licensure.

Tramy Beauty School

The Tramy Beauty School features modern salon equipment and experienced instructors. The school simulates a real salon environment, allowing students to gain hands-on experience that can later be applied in the workplace.

Barbering Courses

The barber program at Tramy consists of 1,500 hours. Students are instructed on clipper cutting, razor styling, steaming facials and flat tops. The school aims to prepare students to pass the barbering licensure exam.
