California Polytechnic State University (CalPoly), located in San Luis Obispo, is one of 23 California State University System schools. Allan Hancock College
The main campus of Allan Hancock College is located in Santa Maria, some 30 miles south of San Luis Obispo. Other campuses are located in Lompoc, Solvang and the Vandenberg Air Force Base. Associate's degrees and certificates are offered in over 100 fields of study. Some programs are designed for students intending to pursue a bachelor's degree at a 4-year school. Students can pursue studies in the culinary arts, early childhood education, business, industrial technology, public safety and the social sciences. The fine arts department offers programs ranging from theater to multimedia design, and the health sciences department offers nursing programs, including programs for Certified Nursing Assistants and Registered Nurses. The college has accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Cuesta College
Cuesta College, located in San Luis Obispo, provides academic transfer courses, vocational training and continuing education opportunities. Day and evening classes are offered as well as opportunities for distance education. Over 75 associate's degrees are offered in addition to nearly 200 certificate programs. The business education department offers programs ranging from computer network administration to paralegal studies. Engineering and technology programs are offered in architecture, automotive technology, criminal justice and welding.
