School Counseling Programs in Utah

Although Utah doesn't have any schools that offer school counseling diploma programs, students can find a few master's programs in the field. Aspiring school counselors in Utah must complete a master's degree program in counseling that includes 600 hours of practical experience. However, the practical experience requirement is lowered to 400 hours for candidates who have served as licensed teachers for at least two years. Both schools listed below offer programs that are approved by the Utah State Office of Education and can be completed in two years.

University of Utah

The University of Utah in Salt Lake City offers a 48-credit-hour master's degree program with a concentration in school counseling. Students are trained in the basics of counseling, personal and professional development for K-12 students, and school administration. Courses include lifespan development for children and adolescents, psychology of women, child psychopathology, substance abuse counseling, and interventions. Prospective counselors must complete a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship in order to graduate, which meets the licensing requirements for Utah counselors. The program culminates in the PRAXIS School Counseling and Guidance Test, which is required for state licensure.

Utah State University

Logan's Utah State University has a part-time master's degree program that focuses on school counseling. Students either take courses at the campus or participate in the school's video conferencing program, which broadcasts live classes to 10 sites throughout the state. Classes are held once a week and include group counseling, diversity treatment, career development, psychometrics and professional issues in school counseling. The program also requires 200 hours of practicum experience and 600 hours in a supervised internship.
