Students who are interested in becoming psychiatrists must first graduate from medical school. Psychiatric training takes place through fellowships, residencies and research programs.

1. Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts
According to U.S. News & World Report, Harvard University ranked as the top school in the nation in 2011. One of the university's facilities, Massachusetts General Hospital, also ranked as the most prestigious psychiatry hospital in the country for 2011, as designated by USN&WR.
While in medical school, aspiring psychiatrists can participate in 4-week clerkships and take electives in psychiatry. Upon graduation, psychiatry students apply to specialty residency and fellowship programs, which involve rotations in eight area health care facilities. Residency training is available in general, adolescent or child psychiatry; fellowships are offered in addiction, forensic or geriatric psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine or psychopharmacology. As of 2010, the university's psychiatry department was receiving over $100 million in research funding every year.
2. University of California - Los Angeles
The Princeton Review ranked the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) as a 'Best Value Public College' for 2011. U.S. News & World Report also ranked the university's Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital seventh among psychiatry hospitals for the same year.
In addition to 8-week clerkships, the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Science offers fellowship, residency and research opportunities. The Department of Psychiatry houses two well-regarded research and treatment centers, including the Depression Center, the first of its kind in the nation, as well as the Molecular and Behavioral Neurosciences Institute.
