Overview of Well-Regarded Psychiatry Schools

1. Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts

As of 2010, Harvard University's psychiatry department receives over $100 million in research funding each year, and according to U.S. News & World Report, it is the top school in the nation as of 2011. While in medical school, aspiring psychiatrists can participate in 4-week clerkships and take elective psychiatry classes. Upon graduation, psychiatry students apply to specialty residency and fellowship programs, which involve rotations in eight area health care facilities. One of the facilities, Massachusetts General Hospital, was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as 2011's most prestigious psychiatry hospital in the country. Residency training is available in general psychiatry, adolescent psychiatry and child psychiatry, and fellowships are offered in forensic psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, addictions psychiatry, psychopharmacology and geriatric psychiatry.

2. University of California - Los Angeles

The Princeton Review listed the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) as a 2011 'Best Value Public College'. In addition to 8-week clerkships, the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Science offers fellowship, residency and research opportunities in addiction psychiatry, child psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and general psychiatric research. Psychiatry training is conducted at over ten facilities, including the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, which is one of less than ten Autism Centers of Excellence funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). Additionally, psychiatry students rotate through Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, 2011's seventh-best psychiatry hospital, according to U.S. News & World Report.

3. University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

The University of Michigan - Ann Arbor is a public research university that ranked 29th in U.S. News and World Report's 2011 National Universities list, making it one of the highest-ranked universities with a psychiatry department in its health system. The Department of Psychiatry houses two well-regarded research and treatment centers including the Depression Center (the first of its kind in the nation) and the Molecular and Behavioral Neurosciences Institute. The department offers several residency programs in a number of psychiatric subjects including addiction, childhood and adolescence, forensic, geriatric and psychosomatic, as well as general psychiatry. There are a number of other training programs including one in substance abuse research, one in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and one in clinical social work.
