Essential Information

Many of the sewing courses available to students in California are housed within fashion certificate and associate degree programs. From basic sewing skills to advanced techniques, these programs, which last from about a semester to two years, emphasize hands-on work experience in the manufacturing and production of clothing. In addition to lab courses, many of these programs also offer work experience opportunities and the opportunity to build a portfolio. Below are brief overviews of California's of the largest public and private non-profit schools that offer sewing programs, as well a table that highlights program and tuition info.


American River College

American River College is located in Sacramento and offers an Associate of Arts in Fashion Design. Created for students interested in careers in apparel manufacturing and production, this program features coursework that develops students' sewing skills, design techniques, and overall understanding of fashion industry practices and trends. Along with courses in fashion illustration and textiles, students complete hands-on classes in patternmaking and design, apparel construction, collection design, and production. A 39-credit Certificate in Fashion Design is also available.

Additionally, students may opt to pursue a Certificate in Apparel Construction. This 12-credit program features courses in the fashion industry, textiles, and apparel construction. In addition to familiarizing students with various fibers and fabrics, this program covers how to create, sew, and alter garments.

City College of San Francisco

Located in San Francisco, the City College of San Francisco offers an Associate in Science in Fashion Design. In addition to an internship requirement, this 2-year program includes coursework in apparel construction, textile analysis, fashion illustration, and flat pattern design. Students also complete a portfolio course. Additionally, the school offers a Certificate of Achievement in Fashion Design that requires completion of 51 credit hours. Graduates may seek careers in design, illustration, or patternmaking.

Students can also pursue a Certificate of Achievement in Textiles. Comprised of 21 credit hours, this program requires coursework in apparel construction, weaving, fashion surface design, and apparel art. Students graduating with this degree may pursue careers as textile designers, weavers, or fabric developers. Individuals looking to study swing techniques without earning college credit can enroll in the school's 119-214 hour Textile and Fabric Design Noncredit Certificate program. Skills covered include weaving, sewing, and alterations.

El Camino Community College District is located in Torrance and offers an Associate in Science in Fashion Design and Production program. It features courses in pattern grading and design, computer fashion illustration, clothing construction, and patternmaking. An 18-credit Certificate of Achievement program in fashion design and production is also available.

Long Beach City College is located in Long Beach and offers an Associate in Arts in Fashion Design. In addition to three levels of sewing courses, this program includes classes in pattern drafting, textiles, fashion computer applications, and selecting clothing.

A Certificate of Achievement in Fashion Design program is also offered. It features coursework in production sewing, fashion show production, and fashion design. Mt. San Antonio College

Located in Walnut, Mt. San Antonio College offers an Associate in Science in Fashion Design. This program includes hands-on courses in patternmaking, computer-assisted drawing, fashion design, and product development. In addition to a work experience opportunity, students can earn credit through field study courses that allow them to travel to New York City and other fashion capitals.

The college also offers beginner and advanced certificate programs in fashion design. The Level I program requires completion of courses in textiles, clothing construction, product development, and more. The Level II program provides advanced opportunities for skill development, with additional courses in fashion and costume design illustration, fashion draping, and computer patternmaking. Students also develop a portfolio.

Located in Costa Mesa, Orange Coast College offers an Associate in Science program in apparel construction. It features beginner- and advanced-level courses in clothing techniques, as well as classes in industrial sewing, tailoring, alterations, couture, and professional practices. Designed to prepare students for careers in patternmaking, clothing construction, and tailoring, this program includes an internship to further students' hands-on design skills. The school also offers a Certificate of Achievement in Apparel Construction program.

Students may also choose to pursue a Certificate of Specialization in Industrial Sewing. This program aims to develop students' knowledge of industrial sewing equipment, as well as their abilities to efficiently construct clothing. Featuring courses in sewing and clothing techniques, as well as a sewing lab, this program can be completed in one to two semesters and may prepare students for job opportunities in apparel construction and textile product assembly. Individuals can also take sewing classes as part of the school's certificate and associate's programs in design.

San Marcos-based Palomar College offers an associate's program in fashion design/technical. Graduates can seek careers in areas such as fashion design, sample work, patternmaking, or illustration. Additional class requirements include basic and advanced sewing, textiles, fashion digital design, and computer-aided design.

Saddleback College

Saddleback College is located in Mission Viejo and offers an Associate in Science in Fashion Design. Characterized by an emphasis in sketching, draping, and patternmaking, this program features coursework in fashion sewing, dressmaking, fashion illustration, fashion apparel, and professional techniques. Optional lab courses are available in clothing construction, design, couture, and costume. Prior to graduation, students complete an internship and a cooperative work experience. A Certificate of Achievement program in fashion design is also offered that incorporates the same classes as the degree program, without the general education requirements.

The school also has an Associate in Science program in advanced fashion design and apparel manufacturing that emphasizes the manufacturing process. Students complete courses in fashion sewing, couture sewing, tailoring, dye processes, and apparel design. In addition, an internship and a cooperative work experience are required. Students may also opt to pursue a Certificate of Achievement in Advanced Fashion Design and Apparel Manufacturing. Alternatively, those interested in costume design can earn an Occupational Skills Award that incorporates coursework in sewing.

Situated in San Diego, San Diego Mesa College offers an Associate in Science in Fashion Design program. Along with familiarizing students with current design technology, this program includes courses that can develop students' critical thinking abilities and their understanding of world fashion. Required coursework includes fashion sketching, apparel construction, textiles, 2-D design, and computer fashion design.
