Sewing Classes in South Florida

South Florida has one college and a technical education center that offer sewing classes. Below are brief overviews of the programs, as well as a table with school and tuition information.

Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center

Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center is located in Miami and offers a variety of career-oriented programs. These include a 600-hour fashion design services program that can help students acquire the skills they need to work as patternmakers, sewing professionals and retail sales associates. Ninth-grade level scores on the language, math and reading portions of the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) are necessary to receive the certificate.

The program is divided into four, 150-hour occupational areas, with one section devoted entirely to custom sewing, dressmaking and tailoring. Other areas of study include fashion coordinating, retail sales and patternmaking for apparel. Through integrated coursework, students also learn about some of the environmental, financial and management issues associated with the fashion business.

Miami Dade College

This college is also located in Miami and currently enrolls over 60,000 students annually. Through the School of Continuing Education and Professional Development, students can pursue a number of courses in sewing and pattern drafting.

In the basic sewing class, students who are new to the craft learn how to operate a sewing machine, cut and pin a pattern, choose fabrics and finish the final garment. Through the Learn to Sew classes, beginning and experienced sewers can also acquire hand and machine skills as they learn how to develop their own custom designs. In addition, the class in sewing alterations provides training in button and zipper replacement, hemming and lining.

Aspiring entrepreneurs may also be interested in the 18-hour fashion design program, as well as the courses in pattern creation and alteration.
