Essential Information

Students can refine their vocal talent by pursuing a degree or diploma in music with a focus in voice or opera studies. Program options include diplomas, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees and doctorates. Diploma and bachelor's programs usually focus on improving a student's vocal performance skills and music proficiency, while master's and doctoral programs provide focused advanced training for undergraduates with music degrees. Programs of all levels often feature opportunities for students to get private vocal lessons and give live performances at the school or in the community. An audition is usually necessary to apply to a program.


The Juilliard School

Located in the heart of New York City, The Juilliard School is a world-renowned college established in 1905. The school offers diploma, bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs in music, including programs in voice.

Undergraduate students can pursue a 3-year Diploma of Music in Voice to develop their performance techniques and preparedness for live audiences through coursework and individual lessons. They can also pursue the 4-year Bachelor of Music in Voice, which includes courses that help students build all-around skills for performing and assist students in repertoire choices, interpretations, rehearsals, vocal lessons and coaching.

Graduate diploma program options include a postgraduate music diploma for those with an undergraduate credential in music and a 2-year post-master's diploma in opera studies. Students can also pursue a master's degree in music with a voice specialization to focus on opera performance and vocal studies. The school's Doctor of Musical Arts degree provides focused study in vocal arts with vocal lessons, coaching, superlative performances and scholarly music studies.

The University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music, located in Rochester, New York, gives students the opportunity to participate in many local concerts every year. The school offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs for those seeking education in music.

The school's Bachelor of Music in Applied Music - Performance program focuses on developing performance skills through music courses and vocal lessons. Designed for a singer who wishes to develop and design a unique vocal program, the Bachelor of Music in Musical Arts program features two years of foundational music courses followed by two years of courses tailored to the student's professional goals.
