There is only one for-profit institution within Smyrna, but its close proximity to Atlanta allows students to choose from many options less than 15 miles away. 1 - Georgia State University
Georgia State University is located approximately 11 miles away from Smyrna in Atlanta, and this school offers about 122 programs. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), some of the most popular undergraduate degree programs in 2011-2012 included biology, kindergarten/preschool education, finance, marketing, psychology, accounting, journalism and business administration. Information from that same year showed that the school conferred 4,378 bachelor's degrees, 2,266 master's degrees and 437 doctoral degrees, according to the NCES. Law was by far the most popular area of study among doctoral degree recipients, with 192 degrees conferred in 2011-2012.
2 - Emory University
Also situated in Atlanta, Emory University has around 109 programs available. According to the NCES, the school conferred 436 associate degrees in the field of liberal arts and sciences during the 2011-2012 school year. NCES data from that same year showed that the most popular bachelor's degree programs were in the fields of biological sciences, business administration and management, registered nursing, psychology, economics and neuroscience. Also during that same year, business/commerce, epidemiology, business administration, biomedicine, law and medicine were some of the most common areas of study at the graduate level, according to the NCES.
3 - Kennesaw State University
Kennesaw State University is situated about 12 miles away from Smyrna, and this public university offers approximately 72 programs to students. The NCES reported that this university awarded over 3,500 bachelor's degrees, more than 700 master's degrees and about 20 doctoral degrees in 2011-2012. Additionally, the NCES indicated that more than 70 undergraduate and graduate certificates were conferred during that same school year. Business administration and management was a popular field for both bachelor's and master's degree recipients. Other majors that were common in 2011-2012 included elementary education/teaching, speech communication/rhetoric, registered nursing and accounting.
Lowest Net Price

According to NCES calculations from that same year, the following schools had the lowest net prices of all traditional, not-for-profit schools within 15 miles of Smyrna.
1 - Chattahoochee Technical College
Situated in Marietta, which is about four miles from Smyrna, Chattahoochee Technical College had the lowest net price among all schools in the area at $4,230. In 2012-2013, the NCES reported that state residents paid $2,289 for tuition and fees, whereas out-of-state residents paid $4,209. According to the same source, 82% of all undergraduates received grant or scholarship aid during 2011-2012, and the average amount awarded to each student for that year was $3,677. For the 2012-2013 school year, room and board expenses for students living off-campus were estimated at $5,472.
2 - Atlanta Technical College
Atlanta Technical College is located approximately 11 miles outside of Smyrna, and this school had a net price of $6,466. The NCES reported that 95% of first-time students received financial aid during 2011-2012, and the majority of these students received scholarship or grant awards in the average amount of $6,253 per student. In 2012-2013, in-state undergraduate students paid $2,242 for tuition and fees, and out-of-state undergraduates paid $4,162, according to NCES data. During that same school year, the NCES indicated that students spent about $1,000 for supplies and books, and off-campus living expenses were estimated at $5,000 for room and board.
3 - Georgia Institute of Technology - Main Campus
Also located in Atlanta, this public school came in at third for the category with a net price of $9,116. Information from the College Board showed that the average amount of debt after graduation for students from this school was $26,412 per person as of 2013. Records from this same source indicated that 33% of undergraduates had their financial needs fully met. NCES data from the 2012-2013 school year showed that tuition and fees for out-of-state undergraduate students were fairly high at $29,402. By comparison, the NCES showed that in-state undergraduates only paid about a third of that price for tuition and fees, with an average cost of $10,098 in 2012-2013.
Highest Graduation Rate
When the NCES determines a school's overall graduation rate, they look at the number of students who completed their programs in 150% of normal time. That is, if four years is the normal time for a bachelor's degree program, 150% of normal time would be six years. Based on NCES research, the following public and private, not-for-profit schools near Smyrna each had graduation rates higher than 70% in 2012.
1 - Emory University
Emory University had one of the highest graduation rates of any school near Smyrna at 89%. Of the students who started a bachelor's program in 2006, 84% graduated within four years. Data from the NCES in fall 2012 showed that this school retained 95% of full-time students who began in fall 2011.
2 - Georgia Institute of Technology - Main Campus
Located approximately nine miles outside of Smyrna in Atlanta, Georgia Institute of Technology had a graduation rate of 79%. Among the bachelor's students who started coursework in 2006, 34% completed their programs within four years. From fall 2011 to fall 2012, the school managed to retain 95% of full-time and 67% of part-time beginning students, according to the NCES.
3 - Spelman College
Spelman College is also in Atlanta, and this private school featured a 73% overall graduation rate. For the students who started a bachelor's program in 2006, 64% managed to graduate in four years. Fall 2012 retention rates for full-time students who started in fall 2011 were fairly high at 90%, according to the NCES. However, the school only retained 50% of part-time students who started in fall 2011.
Lowest Student-Faculty Ratio

Information from this source showed that the undergraduate population was at 885 in 2012.
