Atlanta Sonography Schools

There are a couple of sonography program options in the Atlanta, GA, area that allow students to earn either a certificate or associate's degree in the field.   • Located in Atlanta's downtown area, Grady Health System offers a diagnostic medical sonography certificate program that only accepts 10 students every year. The program is approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
  • Gwinnett Technical College also offers a diagnostic medical sonography program, but students here earn an associate's degree. The campus is around 28 miles from central Atlanta.

Grady Health System

Training at this school is offered by its School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. In order to enter this program, students need to have a technical or vocational high school diploma. Students are also required to have graduated from a radiologic technology associate's degree program and have proof of prior healthcare experience.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certificate

Full-time students can expect to complete this program in 18 months. This program introduces students to perinatal, abdominal and pediatric imaging through clinical experiences at several Atlanta, GA, healthcare facilities. Clinical training prepares students to work with a team under the instruction of a perinatologist or radiologist. Training also helps develop communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Graduates can seek certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Gwinnett Technical College

Along with learning concepts in a classroom environment, students can earn professional training while participating in clinical work. In order to qualify for clinical work, students need to submit to a drug screening test, allow for a background check, show proof of immunization and pass a tuberculosis skin test.

Associate of Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

This 98-credit hour program can be completed in a minimum of 5 semesters. Coursework covers topics in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, abdominal sonography, specialized procedures, sectional anatomy and obstetrics. In addition to participating in clinical work, students must fulfill general education requirements.
