South Carolina Culinary Arts Colleges
South Carolina is home to about five two-year public colleges that offer culinary arts certificate and degree programs. Two of the colleges maintain culinary institutes under which more comprehensive culinary arts programs are offered.
Denmark Technical College
Located in the city of Denmark, this school offers an 18-credit-hour culinary arts program that provides a foundation in cooking techniques, equipment and dining room operations. Courses include food production principles, bakery production, sanitation, food service management and menu planning. The college awards a Certificate in Applied Science in Culinary Arts upon successful completion the six courses.
Greenville Technical College
Greenville Technical College operates the Culinary Institute of the Carolinas at its Greenville campus. The institute provides students with a baking shop, restaurant kitchen and dining room, as well as features ten faculty members. The school's culinary arts associate's degree program is accredited by the American Culinary Federation Educational Foundation (ACFEF) and graduates qualify to become Certified Culinarians. The baking and pastry arts option trains students in baking techniques for breads, cookies and pies. The school also offers certificate programs, including a 30-credit-hour certificate in baking and pastry arts and a 28-credit-hour certificate in culinary education.
Horry-Georgetown Technical College
Horry-Georgetown Technical College's culinary arts technology program is conducted on two campuses, the first year at the Grand Strand campus in Myrtle Beach and the second year at the campus in Conway. The school offers a 70-credit-hour associate's degree program in culinary arts technology that is accredited by ACFEF. Students gain hands-on experience in baking, à la carte foods, food production, sanitation and management within the college's dining facilities.
Spartanburg Community College
Spartanburg Community College offers two certificates and one associate's degree in culinary arts at its campus in Spartanburg. The one-term culinary fundamentals certificate program is a prerequisite for the three-term culinary arts certificate program. Completion of both of these certificates can apply to the college's associate's degree program in culinary arts, which builds upon the culinary arts training with business, accounting and management courses. Coursework covers food production, nutrition, baking, sanitation, food management and dining room operations. Students gain practical experience in Spartanburg Community College's state-of-the-art kitchen facility.
Trident Technical College
Trident Technical College in Charleston is the home of the Culinary Institute of Charleston. In addition to facilities like a production kitchen, bakery kitchen and catering kitchen, students have access to ten culinary and pastry arts instructors. This two-year college offers certificate programs in culinary arts and baking and pastry arts, as well as associate's degree programs in culinary arts technology. The American Culinary Federation has accredited the degree programs. Students are taught the basics and proceed to advanced baking and culinary techniques through hands-on training in modern laboratories.
