Sports Management Schools and Colleges in the U.S.
Sports management schools prepare students to become operators of spectator sports organizations, including academic and recreation programs, professional athletic teams and amateur groups. Undergraduate and graduate degree programs are available in sports management.
How to Select a Sports Management School
Many colleges offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in sports management. Interested students need to consider their career goals in order to decide which degree to pursue. Career titles vary, but some include professional sports scout or agent, athletic department director, team general manager, sports facility manager and sports event coordinator. An undergraduate degree is sufficient for many positions, but some administrative and academic jobs require a graduate degree.
The objectives of any sports management school program should include applying sports management skills to the workplace and coordinating sport-related events, activities and projects. The curriculum should have subjects related to a student's profession of interest, such as sports ethics and laws, sports administration, sports fundraising and sports recruiting. Individuals need to look for business topics, including human resources, accounting, economics, marketing and advertising. Graduate students should look for programs that provide ample research opportunities and have up-to-date facilities.
Sports management schools that provide career counseling services and have contacts with sports-related agencies are beneficial. An optimal program also provides students with internship opportunities. Any practical experience a student gains while in school is favorable to obtaining employment after graduation. Taking part in other programs, such as study abroad and sports organizations, can help students develop their resumes and make networking connections.
