Preventing and Caring for Sports Related Injuries
This sports medicine course addresses proper evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation techniques for common sports injuries. Methods and tools, such as taping, applying heat or cold packs and the use of pads are demonstrated. Students also receive training in basic vocational skills required in health professions, such as CPR and first aid, as well as how to protect against blood borne pathogens.
Emergency Sports Medicine Course
Students learn to deal with traumatic injuries that have resulted from sports accidents. Stabilizing acute injuries to the head and neck is a key component in this course. A review of CPR and use of the automated external defibrillator (AED) are also included in the curriculum of this sports medicine course.
Kinesiology courses cover the range of human movement. Understanding how human movement happens and the systems that create human movement are emphasized. Fine and gross motor skills are discussed while learning to identify muscle groups and their specific abilities.
Physiology and Exercise Course
This course includes the study of reactions of physiological systems to different types of exercise (aerobic and anaerobic). Students study how the body responds and adapts during and after exercise. This is a preparatory course for future athletic trainers and strength and conditioning specialists. Sports medicine students learn the signs of an overheated or exhausted athlete.
Therapeutic Exercise Course
Sports medicine includes therapeutic exercise regimens that help to rehabilitate the injured areas. Courses in therapeutic exercise are part of a sports medicine curriculum and train students in the evaluation, development and review of therapeutic exercise regimens. These exercises help keep muscle groups from degenerating during a recovery period while minimizing the impact on injured parts of the body.
