Education Centers and Programs

School districts and universities in Stockton have a wide range of opportunities for adult learners. Aside from education skill courses, such as English as a Second Language or GED testing, adults can also learn career skills, computer literacy or even work toward certificates or degrees especially designed for working adults by offering courses in the evenings and on the weekends. Courses may be standalone or part of a program, and some programs may be aimed specifically at senior citizens. Two schools and some of their course options are explored below.


Stockton School for Adults' Programs

Part of the Stockton Unified School District, Stockton School for Adults provides English as a second language and career technical courses. A high school completion program offers courses in preparation for the GED or a high school diploma. The school also offers classes for seniors and adults with disabilities.

Adult Secondary Education Courses

Instruction is offered in courses required by the Stockton Unified School District Governing Board for passage of the California High School Exit Examination, allowing adults to earn a high school diploma. Subjects include biological and physical sciences, English, world history, American government and U.S. history.

English as a Second Language and Citizenship Courses

Beginning through advanced ESL and citizenship classes are provided for adults wishing to go through the U.S. naturalization process. Courses in family literacy teach parents how to provide English language assistance to school-age children.

General Educational Development (GED) Testing

The Stockton School for Adults offers GED testing in high school subjects. Passage of the GED test grants an equivalency diploma that enables a student to apply for jobs and entrance to many colleges and vocational schools.

Career Technical Education Courses

Programs of study include administrative assistant, job skills training, administrative medical assistant, bookkeeper and other areas. Students may also take courses in specific computer programs, including Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Works and QuickBooks.

Senior Adult Program

Computer literacy courses are offered for senior adults at beginning through advanced levels. Areas covered include Internet tips, e-mail and Microsoft Works; all courses are offered four times per school year.

University of the Pacific's Adult School Programs

University of the Pacific is a 4-year, private school that offers adult school programs within its Center for Professional and Continuing Education. Adults enrolled in the evening degree program at the University of the Pacific Adult School have the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree in organizational behavior in 20 months. The school also offers customized corporate training and programs in project management, workforce education and substance abuse counseling.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Courses

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers a diverse array of classes for all adults, including seniors. Subjects include arts and crafts, bird watching, renewable energy, opera and social networking.

Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate Program

This 22-credit hour program provides training in providing counseling to individuals suffering from substance abuse. Evening and weekend classes are available; online sections are offered as well. Participants learn skills in assessment, case management and crisis intervention. Working with both individuals and groups, students complete an internship of 255 hours, which exceeds the requirement for state certification.

Bachelor of Science in Organizational Behavior

This evening program, focusing on business and organizational skills, is designed to accommodate adults with full time jobs who wish to complete a bachelor's degree. Students take courses every eight weeks, for a total of 20 months for completion. Skills covered include critical thinking, writing, financial management, decision-making and leadership.
