Surgery Assistant Course and Class Descriptions
Surgery assistant courses are available through surgery assistant or surgical first assistant undergraduate and graduate certificate or associate's degree programs. These programs usually take a year or two, depending on students' prior health care experience. They can be completed online, on-site or through a hybrid format. Surgery assistant courses teach students how to prepare individuals for surgery, apply wound dressings and assist surgeons.
Surgical Assistant Course
Surgery assistant courses are offered at varying levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced. The beginning surgical assistant course introduces students to basic surgical procedures and techniques for general, gynecological, urological, head and neck surgeries. Intermediate courses familiarize students with procedures used in orthopedic, neurosurgical and plastic surgeries. Advanced courses include an overview of surgical medications, anesthesia and surgical emergencies. All of these courses include time gaining practical experience through clinicals, where students observe and work with surgeons and surgical assistants.
Medical Terminology Course
Medical terminology courses include an overview of all the terms typically used in medical procedures. These terms include words for the techniques, tools and procedures commonly used in surgery. Basic and advanced medical terminology is covered in this surgery assistant class. Upon completion, students should know the correct phrase for tools and procedures and exactly what they mean.
Surgical Complications Course
Anytime people go into surgical situations, there's a risk of complications. Through this intermediate surgical assistant course, students learn about different types of complications, how to prevent them, what to do if they happen and the seriousness of the complications. Post-surgery complications, such as infections, are discussed. Professors discuss possible legal ramifications of a surgical complication and how they might affect the surgical assistant. Typically, information is presented in lecture format and is enhanced through reading case studies.
Wound Closure Techniques
One of the main responsibilities of surgical assistants is closing wounds and applying salves to them. This intermediate surgical assistant class covers the different types of wounds, the type of dressings needed for them and the best methods for closing them so they heal properly. Often, this course is accompanied by hands-on practice in stitching wounds.
Clinical Course
Clinicals are one of the most important parts of any health care program because they provide students the opportunity to provide actual medical assistance to patients. The clinical course for surgical assistants gives students the opportunity to sit through and aid in many different types of surgery. During the clinical, students practice proper techniques and learn their responsibilities in a relatively controlled setting.
