Comparison of Surgery Technology Programs in New York City

Although the New York City area has several schools with surgical technology degree programs, most of these are for-profit schools. Candidates interested in studying surgery technology at a not-for-profit school have a more limited selection. CUNY Kingsborough Community College is a 2-year, public school that offers an Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology program. Nassau Community College also offers a surgical technology associate degree program. Students in this program can join the school's Surgical Technology Club and meet others who share similar interests in this field. Western Suffolk BOCES has a 12-month surgical technology program that offers classes during the day. Completing any one of these programs should prepare the student to take the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting certification exam to earn the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential.

Programs at CUNY Kingsborough Community College

Kingsborough Community College (KCC), part of the City University of New York (CUNY), offers credit and non-credit programs to students, with most classes having less than 30 students. The Nursing Department at KCC offers surgical technology and nursing associate degree programs.

Associate in Applied Science in Surgical Technology

The surgical technology program requires that students complete a mixed curriculum of general education courses, lectures, laboratory courses and clinical practicums. Students complete courses in microbiology of health and disease, medical ethics and surgical pharmacology, which is an online course. Also required are 5 sequential courses on surgical technology/procedures. To successfully pass the clinical portion of the program and be eligible for national certification, students must complete at least 120 surgical cases.

Certain requirements must be met to be eligible for this program. In addition to passing the COMPASS math test and the CUNY ACT reading and writing test, applicants must complete anatomy and physiology and freshman English as prerequisite courses. They must show proof of residency or U.S. citizenship. Prior to starting clinicals, students must show proof of a physical examination, current immunizations, TB test, malpractice insurance and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification.

Programs at Nassau Community College

The largest of SUNY's 30 community colleges, Nassau Community College (NCC) provides instruction in more than 70 fields of study. The allied health sciences department at NCC offers associate degree programs in physical therapy assistant, medical laboratory technology, respiratory care, radiologic technology and surgical technology. In addition to being accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, NCC also holds accreditation from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology.

Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Surgical Technology

This program trains students to operate on a surgical team as the circulating assistant, scrub or second assistant. The role of a surgical technologist varies, requiring the graduate to know how to assist the anesthesiologist, monitor the patient, retract wound edges and other techniques. The 2-year program requires that students complete general education courses, surgical technology courses and clinical rotations. The clinical rotations provide students with exposure to various surgical areas, such as central supply, delivery room, ambulatory surgery centers and endoscopy units.

Programs at Western Suffolk BOCES

Part of the Wilson Technological Center, Western Suffolk BOCES offers career and technical education for adults and high school students. The School of Surgical Technology, located at Wilson Tech's Northport campus, offers a surgical technology program in the spring and the fall of each year. Class sizes for this program do not exceed 10 students per class.

Surgical Technology Certificate of Completion

This 1,200-hour program includes lectures, lab studies and clinical rotations. Clinicals, consisting of 590 hours, are held at various healthcare facilities. Applicants must be at least 17 years old, show proof of citizenship, have a high school diploma and possess the abilities to meet program technical requirements. They must also have adequate scores on pre-entrance exams; a prep class is available to prepare students for pre-entrance exams. In addition to completing a personal interview, an applicant must submit a writing sample and 3 letters of recommendation.
