Students of this program learn duties applicable to operating rooms and doctor's offices, including safety and care of patients, aseptic techniques and emergency surgical techniques. The program also covers basic sciences, surgical equipment preparation and medical technology. Students also work in live surgical situations in preparation to share in the responsibility of the operating room team during surgery.
Upon completion of the curriculum, students can sit for the National Certifying Examination for Surgical Technologists in order to become a certified surgical technologist (CST). Students passing the certification exam can seek employment in surgery centers and physician's offices, as well as explore careers as a vendor representative or instrument processor.

Students learn techniques related birth and delivery, endoscopy and sterilization. Surgery-specific information such as drugs, implements and equipment are introduced in a hands-on environment. Career-related topics such as communication, legal and ethical issues are covered in the curriculum as well.
