Schools and Training Programs

Surgical technology programs are offered by Washington community and technical colleges, and award students with a certificate upon completion. These schools tend to be in or near Seattle. Surgical technology programs may take less than a year to complete. Credits earned may be able to transfer to an associate's degree program. In these programs, students receive hands-on training. Students can sit for a national certification exam after completing their programs. Below, two of the schools that offer these programs are described in greater detail.

Seattle Central Community College's Surgical Technology Programs

Located in the lively Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Seattle Central Community College provides academic and technical training to over 7,000 students a year. The school offers a certificate program in surgical technology as one of five programs in its Health and Human Services Division.

Surgical Technology Certificate

This full-time surgical technology program lasts three academic quarters and must be started in the fall. Students learn duties applicable to operating rooms and doctor's offices, including safety and care of patients, aseptic techniques and emergency surgical techniques. The program also covers basic sciences, surgical equipment preparation and medical technology. Students also work in live surgical situations in preparation to share in the responsibility of the operating room team during surgery.

Upon completion of the curriculum, students can sit for the National Certifying Examination for Surgical Technologists in order to become a certified surgical technologist (CST). Students passing the certification exam can seek employment in surgery centers and physician's offices, as well as explore careers as a vendor representative or instrument processor.
