Dallas Schools with Teacher Certification Programs
There are a variety of schools offering teacher certification options in the Dallas area, some of which focus only on post-baccalaureate certification or on graduate programs in education. Three schools, none more than a half-hour from downtown Dallas, and the certification training programs they provide are the focus of this article. There is also a table of facts about teach school, such as enrollment, tuition and the graduation rate.
- Located at the heart of the city, Dallas Baptist University offers several bachelor's degree programs with teacher certification as well as a master's degree in teaching. It also offers the Pathways to Teaching program and professional certifications.
- About 10 miles from downtown Dallas in Irving, the University of Dallas offers teacher certification through a bachelor's degree program in interdisciplinary studies. It also offers post-baccalaureate certifications in several areas.
- The University of Texas at Arlington is 21 miles from downtown Dallas. It offers many certification programs at several levels, including through bachelor's and master's degree programs. The university offers an Education in Teaching certificate and several professional certifications.
Dallas Baptist University
DBU offers bachelor's and master's degrees with teacher certification, several accelerated options combining bachelors' and masters' degrees in areas such as ESL, special education and reading and/or ESL and various endorsement-level certification options. Several of the endorsement level options are offered online.
Bachelor of Arts or Science in EC-Grade 6, Grades 4-8, Grades 7-12 Communication Studies, Grades 8-12, EC-Grade 12 Certification in Kinesiology or Music Education
Teacher education at DBU includes coursework in three areas totaling 126-145 semester hours. The general studies component is comprised of classes such as English, computer science, history and mathematics. The academic major portion includes content area (major) coursework and pedagogical classes, such as best practices in teaching. The professional component includes 12-30 semester hours in courses such as child development and educational foundations and culminates in a 12-week student teaching practicum.
Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.)
The M.A.T. option includes teacher certification option, and is generally designed to either broaden expertise or add skills. The program requires completion of at least 36 hours of classes, and specialization options include EC-Grade 6, elementary, secondary, all-level, ESL, Montessori, multisensory and distance learning. Coursework will include academic specialization areas such as teaching methods, along with content, technology and professional coursework. Degree candidates will need to complete an internship and must prepare a professional portfolio.
Pathways to Teaching
DBU offers a Pathways to Teaching program which allows students with a bachelor's degree to pursue teacher certification without getting a master's degree. Certifications are available for EC-Grade 6, Grades 4-8, 8-12 and all-level in music and kinesiology. Applicants must have a 3.0/4.0 GPA in previous coursework, provide evidence of sound moral character and meet Texas Higher Education Assessment score minimums.
Additional endorsement programs offered by DBU include advanced certificates in curriculum and instruction, distance learning and ESL. Certifications are also available for those wishing to become educational diagnosticians, higher education administrators, master reading teachers, reading specialists, school counselors, and school principals. At the post-master's degree level, DBU offers a certificate in school superintendency.
University of Dallas
At the undergraduate level, UD requires completion of a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with specialization in a field of education, plus passage of comprehensive and oral exams. At the graduate level, applicants must have earned a bachelor's degree and have completed requisite coursework prior to being admitted. Both programs require the same core coursework and student teaching experience to become certified.
Elementary Certification - EC-6 Generalist
The EC-Grade 6 Generalist certification program specifies 17 education courses covering topics such as math and science for elementary teachers, developmental reading and educational psychology. Several classes require classroom observations and a student teaching course serves as a capstone experience. Post-baccalaureate students will also complete a portfolio.
Middle School Certification (Grades 4-8)
Candidates for certification Middle School (4-8) must complete required courses covering child development, reading assessment and correction and principles of elementary education. Observation experiences and classroom assignments in science, math and reading, along with practicum in a middle school are designed to give students real life experiences. All students must take a reflective seminar and complete a 12-week student teaching assignment.
Candidates for Secondary certification need to complete 24 hours in a teaching field, 18 of which are upper division courses. Students wishing to major in two or more content areas will need to complete additional content hours. Education coursework will include middle and high school observation courses, adolescent psychology and principles of secondary education.
All-Level Certification (Grades EC-12)
This certification program is designed for teachers of subjects such as language, drama and art. Candidates have to have 24 hours of teaching field courses, 18 of which are upper division courses, and then complete 13 education courses including student teaching. The education component will include classes in computer problem solving, classroom observations in elementary and middle schools, adolescent psychology and educational evaluation.
University of Texas at Arlington
At the undergraduate level, UT Arlington requires that students complete two years of prerequisite coursework with a 2.75 GPA and pass the Texas Higher Education Assessment with acceptable scores prior to being admitted to the education program. At the graduate level, both certification-only programs and master's degrees area available, some of which may be done online.
Bachelor of Science or Arts, EC-Grade 6 (Bilingual option), Mid-Level, Secondary, All-Level
After gaining admittance to the education program, EC-6 and mid-level students will begin a 2-year program that covers education courses specific to their level. Secondary and all-level (music, art, etc.) teacher candidates will major in their subject area and then begin taking education courses toward the end of their studies. All certification candidates complete field experiences and student teaching, and must pass state certification tests. Educational coursework will cover teaching methods, bilingual education, child development and educational foundations.
Education in Teaching Certificate, EC-Grade 6 (Bilingual option), Mid-Level, Secondary, All-Level
The Education in Teaching certification-only program requires 30-33 credit hours for the EC-6 level or 15 credit hours for the mid-level, secondary or all-level programs. Courses may cover content, literacy, instructional strategies in content areas, classroom management, and will include a 12-week student teaching experience. To apply, candidates must have completed a bachelor's degree with a 3.0/4.0 GPA during the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework.
Master of Education in Teaching with Teacher Certification, EC-Grade 6 Bilingual and Generalist, Mid- and All-Level, Secondary
The master's degree in teaching option with teacher certification is a 36-54 hour program. Up to 18 hours of teacher certification coursework must be completed and state certification exams must be passed by candidates prior to beginning the master's degree coursework. Course load requirements for the EC-6 generalist and bilingual generalist programs are the heaviest, and all programs will include content area, instructional methodology and research classes and a student teaching course.
Teachers with valid teaching certificates have a series of options to earn additional, or add-on, endorsement certifications at UT Arlington. These include options in bilingual, ESL and gifted and talented education, as well as certifications to become a master reading teacher, reading specialist or school counselor.
