Telemetry Course and Class Descriptions

Telemetry is the study of measurable distances using wire or radio signals. In most cases, it's applied in the medical field in the use of electrocardiograms (EKG or ECG). Classes in this subject are available at many community colleges.

Essential Information

Students in telemetry programs become prepared to work as EKG or ECG technicians. Programs are about a year in length, and provide instruction in recognizing heart problems, working with patients and understanding medical terminology.

Medical Terminology Course

Everyone performing a role in a health care field must first have an understanding of medical terminology in order to adequately communicate with patients and other medical professionals. Students learn pronunciations, spellings and definitions of medical language that is commonly found when working with electrocardiogram machines (EKG or ECG). Prefixes and roots help students to identify medical words they may not become familiar with throughout their careers.

Electrocardiography Course

Students learn how to work with patients during EKG procedures and learn how to make a patient's experience a comfortable one. They study the heart's conduction system, arrhythmias, myocardial infarctions and heart rates and also train to perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram. Lessons often employ the use of texts and case studies. This is an introductory course that is used as prerequisites for others.

EKG Analysis Course

Students look at case study EKGs from hospitals and analyze them. They learn how to identify heart rate dysrhythmias and other abnormalities. They may use texts and laboratory experience to build their telemetry skills.

Cardiovascular Technology Course

Students gain firsthand experience with electrocardiographic equipment while working in an on-campus lab using EKG machines and interpreting readouts. Course requirements also involve off-campus work in an approved clinical setting.

Telemetry Practicum

The objective of this practicum is to put what was learned in the classroom into practice in a laboratory setting. The curriculum changes depending on the program and student; however, it commonly includes practice with an electrocardiograph machine. Students may also work with patients to check vitals and prepare them for EKG procedures; they must emphasize patient care skills. This course stresses the use and maintenance of the EKG machines and other telemetry equipment.
