Telemetry Monitor Course and Class Descriptions
Telemetry monitor courses are found in certificate and associate's degree programs in telemetry monitor technology, electrocardiogram technology and nursing. Through these courses, students learn how to read electrocardiogram (EKG) machines and identify normal and abnormal rhythms, which are used to identify and treat cardiac disease.
Introductory EKG Interpretation Course
Students in this course become familiar with the natural rhythm of the heartbeat, so they can detect abnormal patterns in test subjects. Coursework familiarizes students with normal, lethal and non-lethal EKG patterns. Students listen to and study rhythms though the use of taped records, videos and simulated monitors. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to identify irregular heartbeats and diagnose a variety of cardiovascular problems.
Basic Arrhythmia Clinic Course
This is a practical, intermediate-level course designed to help students become familiar with the ins and outs of the job. Students taking this class spend time in a local hospital or clinic working under the supervision of a licensed technician, doctor or nurse. Students will learn to demonstrate familiarity with regular EKG rhythms and identify any abnormal patterns. Often, this course involves checking on multiple patients regularly, recording their vital signs and following hospital protocol if an abnormal pattern occurs.
Monitor Surveillance Course
In this course, students become familiar with a wide range of cardiac problems and the healthcare needs of patients suffering from them. They gain practical experience interpreting EKG rhythms and reporting abnormal rhythms to the doctor or nurse in charge. Additionally, students will learn about a variety of cardiac diseases, how the heart works, and specific rhythms and patterns to bear in mind.
Telemetry Monitor Course
Through this class, students gain experience interacting with patients suffering from cardiac illnesses. They practice admitting patients and monitoring their progress. In some programs, students study ways to provide advanced cardiac life support so they can aid doctors or nurses in critical situations. Students study the anatomy of the heart and the methods used to identify heart problems. Other course topics include comforting patients and preparing a patient's skin for the electrode, which will monitor his or her EKG rhythms.
