Welding Programs in Texas

Technical and community colleges in cities across Texas offer a variety of different welding programs that include comprehensive training in various welding styles. Welding programs tend to award students certificates after completion. Two schools in Texas with welding programs are explored in greater detail below. Get details about certificate options and hands-on training opportunities. Learn facts about both schools in the table provided at the end of this article.

  • Houston Community College offer five welding certificate programs, ranging from basic to more specialized studies. The college is based about eight miles east of downtown Houston.
  • Texas State Technical College - Harlingen is located in the southernmost part of Texas and is home to a popular 3-semester welding certificate program.

Houston Community College

With nearly 50,000 students enrolled each year, the Houston Community College System is the largest school in Texas with welding programs. Though the college system consists of over six campuses and numerous outreach locations, the welding programs are only offered at the Central Campus in the heart of Houston. At this facility, students are able to study welding in one of 68 welding booths, each of which contains TIG, MIG, gas and plasma equipment.

Basic Welding Helper Certificate

This 18-credit program introduces students to basic welding methods, including oxy-fuel and metal arc. Students also undertake an overview of the welding industry and a course on critical thinking in order to help them succeed at subsequent opportunities.

Basic Welding Certificate

This 2-semester course program builds upon the introductory courses offered in the welding helper certificate program. This 26-credit program culminates with an in-depth study of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and blueprint reading for welders.

Welding - Pipe Specialization Certificate

The pipe specialization builds upon the lessons of the basic welding certificate program, which includes the SMAW and oxy-fuel welding techniques. Students also take eight credits in pipe welding as an introductory course in layout.

Welding - TIG Specialization Certificate

TIG, or tungsten inert gas, welding uses high electrical currents to bond materials, such as copper, aluminum or stainless steel. This welding program curriculum includes the courses from the basic welding program, a fabrication course and eight credits of TIG welding training.

Welding - MIG Specialization

Metal inert gas (MIG) welding is similar to TIG welding in that it uses a controlled electrical charge to weld non-ferrous metals; however, MIG welders uses a consumable electrode so that the process can be done more quickly. The MIG specialization is nearly identical to the TIG program, but with only eight credits of MIG training courses.

Texas State Technical College - Harlingen

The Harlingen campus of Texas State Technical College has offered welding training for more than 30 years. Students have access to a welding shop that houses 120 welding stations, 40 of which include oxyacetylene. As a member of the American Welding Society Educational Institution, Texas State Technical College - Harlingen is committed to meeting industry standards for employee training.

Welding Certificate

This welding program lasts three semesters and results in a certificate of completion. Students practice with a broad range of welding techniques, including TIG, MIG, SMAW and pipe welding. In addition to welding, students also receive an introduction to safety fundamentals, blueprint reading and business English.
