1. Rice University in Houston

Rice University is a small, private school that is consistently recognized as a top research and teaching institution. Since 1983, it has been ranked among the top 20 national colleges by U.S. News and World Report. In 2010, the publication also ranked Rice University as the 17th best college in the U.S. Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine acknowledged Rice University as the fourth-best value private university in 2010. And in that same year, a survey conducted by Princeton Review found that Rice University enrollees to have the best quality of life among national schools.

With a student-to-faculty ratio of 5:1, Rice University students are able to benefit from small class sizes and personal attention. In the 2009-2010 academic year, more than 70% of undergraduate students received financial assistance, allowing for affordable learning. The university is divided into eight schools, including the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, George R. Brown School of Engineering, School of Architecture, School of Humanities and Wiess School of Natural Sciences. Rice University offers degree programs in biomolecular engineering, linguistics, philosophy, business administration, economics and computer science.

2. University of Texas at Austin

As the largest 4-year college in the state, the University of Texas at Austin was ranked as one of the top 50 colleges in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2010. The same year, Princeton Review named it a Best Western College and included the university among the top 20 in the U.S. for several categories, including Best Career Services, Best College Library, Best College Newspaper and Best Athletic Facilities. The university's graduate programs in law, education, engineering and business are consistently ranked in the country's top 20 programs by U.S. News and World Report.

This public university offers more than 170 academic programs and awards more than 8,500 undergraduate degrees annually. The University of Texas at Austin is comprised of 17 professional colleges and schools, including the McCombs School of Business, Cockrell School of Engineering, Jackson School of Geosciences and the School of Nursing. Degree programs span such fields as journalism, architecture, education, civil engineering, psychology and geological sciences. Students have access to a number of research centers, libraries and museums--including the Blanton Museum of Art, which is the country's largest university-based art museum.
