The Top Undergraduate Computer Science Schools in the U.S.

1. Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA

The Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech, is a top-ranked research university in many fields, particularly those of science, engineering and the development of technology. For example in 2011, U.S. News and World Report ranked Georgia Tech as having the fourth-best engineering program in the entire country, with several subdisciplines also placing in the top ten. Its College of Computing, where undergraduates take courses in computer science, also placed in the 2010 top computer science colleges list compiled by U.S. News and World Report. Two degrees are offered by the School of Computer Science, including a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science and a B.S. in Computational Media, the latter of which has an artistic focus with its courses being offered through the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.

2. Stanford University in Stanford, CA

Stanford University is one of the top universities in all of the United States, as evidenced by its fifth-place ranking on U.S. News and World Report's 2011 National Universities list. Stanford University's Department of Computer Science, part of the College of Engineering, was founded in 1965, and in 2010, it was tied for first with three other schools on U.S. News and World Report's list of the best colleges in the nation with undergraduate computer science undergraduate. A B.S. in Computer Science is offered, and three interdisciplinary computer science programs are also offered to undergraduates. These include certificates in computer systems engineering, symbolic systems and mathematical and computational sciences. Most courses for computer science undergraduates are offered in the Gates Computer Science Building.

3. Yale University in New Haven, CT

Part of the Ivy League, Yale University is one of the highest-ranked universities in the nation, having placed third on the National Universities list in U.S. News and World Report in 2011. The Department of Computer Science at Yale University focuses on collaborating with the school's departments of mathematics, electrical engineering and psychology. In 2010, the U.S. News and World Report list of the best national universities ranked Yale University as the top school to offer an undergraduate computer science major. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a B.S. in Computer Science; they may also enroll in a combined B.S./Master of Science (M.S.) program. Topics of instruction include algorithm analysis and design, systems programming, discrete mathematics, computer architecture and data structures.
