Top U.S. Schools with Undergraduate Computer Science Programs
1. Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA
The Georgia Institute of Technology is a research university that U.S. News & World Report ranked fourth for its engineering programs in 2011, with several subdisciplines also placing in the top ten. In 2010, USN&WR also designated the school's College of Computing as one of the top computer science colleges in the country. Once enrolled, students can earn a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science or a B.S. in Computational Media, the latter of which has an artistic focus and offers courses through the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.
2. Stanford University in Stanford, CA
As of 2011, Stanford University ranked fifth on the U.S. News & World Report list of national universities in 2011. Along with three other schools, the Department of Computer Science, part of the College of Engineering, ranked first among undergraduate computer science programs in 2010, as designated by USN&WR. Undergraduate offerings include a B.S. in Computer Science and three interdisciplinary computer science programs, which can lead to a certificate in mathematical and computational sciences, computer systems engineering or symbolic systems. Most courses for computer science undergraduates are offered in the Gates Computer Science Building.
3. Yale University in New Haven, CT
An Ivy League Institution, Yale University placed third among national universities, according to U.S. News & World Report in 2011. Additionally, USN&WR ranked the university's undergraduate computer science program number one in the country for 2010. Once admitted to the Department of Computer Science, students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a B.S. in Computer Science; they may also enroll in a combined B.S./Master of Science (M.S.) program. Topics of instruction include algorithm analysis and design, systems programming, discrete mathematics, computer architecture and data structures. Additional program features include collaborative partnerships with the mathematics, electrical engineering and psychology departments.
