Students admitted into the economics Ph.D. program can obtain a master's degree by meeting basic course requirements. Courses are offered in price theory, quantitative methods, economic research and analysis, mathematical economics and economic history. Although the Ph.D. program is completed after five years of study, the master's degree may be obtained after nine courses.

2. New York University in New York City
Located in Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighborhood, New York University (NYU) is the country's largest private university. The school's economics graduate program was ranked the 12th-best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2010. NYU comprises 14 schools, including the College of Arts and Science, which contains the Department of Economics.
