A master's degree program in economics teaches students concepts in financial economics, macroeconomics and economic analysis. Also in 2010, the Princeton Review named the University of Chicago a 'Best Midwestern College' and a 'Best Value College' among private schools. Students admitted into the economics Ph.D. program can obtain a master's degree by meeting basic course requirements. Courses are offered in price theory, quantitative methods, economic research and analysis, mathematical economics and economic history. Although the Ph.D. program is completed after five years of study, the master's degree may be obtained after nine courses.

2. New York University in New York City
Located in Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighborhood, New York University (NYU) is the country's largest private university. The school's economics graduate program was ranked the 12th-best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2010. NYU comprises 14 schools, including the College of Arts and Science, which contains the Department of Economics.
Students in the department can pursue a Master of Arts in Economics, a degree program that requires five core classes, five electives and a comprehensive economics research paper. Students take courses in applied microeconomics, international finance and economic development. Though students have a 5-year time frame to complete the program, the degree can be obtained within three semesters of study.
