1. Columbia University in New York City, NY
Established in 1754, Columbia University is part of the Ivy League of higher education. In 2011, Columbia was ranked fourth among national universities by U.S. News & World Report.
The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, which administers the internationally known Pulitzer Prize and Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Awards, offers programs leading to a Master of Science (M.S.), Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Communications. The school offers study-abroad options, as well as dual-degree programs that combine journalism with law, international and public affairs, business, religion or computer science. The University of California - Berkeley is the highest ranked public university among national universities according to U.S. News & World Report in 2011. Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism offers a unique Master of Journalism program that pushes journalism students to integrate training in all disciplines, including photojournalism, print journalism and other forms of media. Ranked 14th among liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report in 2011, Washington and Lee University (W&L) is a highly competitive, private school serving just over 2,100 students from 2010-2011. W&L's Department of Journalism and Mass Communications offers sequences in journalism, business journalism and mass communications. W&L's signature programs include business journalism and journalism ethics. The Knight program in journalism ethics provides a 2-day weekend seminar with a keynote speaker. The journalism sequence includes both print and broadcast courses, with students in those classes collaborating on projects for print, electronic and Internet media.
