School Overview

Graduate students who are interested in advanced studies in journalism can find programs at Columbia University, an Ivy League institution, as well as the University of California and the University of Maryland. Each of the three schools offers master's degrees in journalism; doctoral programs are available at Columbia University and the University of Maryland. Unique to the University of California are its dual degree programs in journalism and other major fields of study, such as law. All three schools also offer concentrations or specialized coursework in particular areas of journalism.

Top U.S. Schools with Graduate Programs in Journalism

1. Columbia University in New York, NY

Columbia University is an Ivy League school and a private research institution that U.S. News & World Report ranked fourth among national universities in 2012. The university's Graduate Journalism School also administers the renowned Pulitzer Prize, which honors recipients for their achievements in print journalism, among other categories. At the school, students can earn a Master of Science (M.S.) in Journalism and specialize in one of four areas, including newspaper, broadcast, digital media or magazine journalism. Students also have the option to pursue an investigative track offered through the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism.

Experienced reporters who want to gain skills in a specific journalistic area, such as health and science, arts and culture, politics or business, may consider the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Journalism. Five dual master's degree programs are also offered, which combine the study of journalism with international and public affairs, business, law or religion, among other areas. A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Communications with a concentration in journalism is also available.

2. University of California - Berkeley

The University of California in Berkeley was designated as a 'Best Western College' and 'Best Value Public College' by The Princeton Review in 2011. The institution was also named the top public university in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2012. The Graduate School of Journalism offers a Master of Journalism (M.J.) program, through which students acquire experience in print, online and broadcast media. Coursework includes specialty topics in scientific and environmental journalism, business reporting, photojournalism and global reporting. Three dual degrees are also offered, including an M.J./M.A. in Asian Studies, M.J./Juris Doctor (law degree) and M.J./Master of Public Health.

3. University of Maryland - College Park

In 2012, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Maryland in College Park as one of the top 20 public universities in the country. At the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, graduate students can enjoy small class sizes while pursuing a non-thesis M.J. program or a thesis-based M.A. in Journalism. Students can choose one of three study tracks, including multi-platform journalism and broadcast news, as well as a track for returning journalists. Graduates who wish to teach, conduct research or consult in the journalism field might consider the Ph.D. in Journalism program.
