Florida State University (FSU) is a public research institution that U.S. News & World Report ranked 47th among public schools and 104th among national universities in 2011. Through its 16 colleges, FSU offers approximately 275 degree programs to roughly 40,000 students each year at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional levels. University colleges include the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Communication and Information and College of Business. Students can also pursue specialized studies through the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance, College of Criminology and Justice and College of Motion Picture Arts.

2. University of Florida in Gainesville, FL

The University of Florida (UF) is a public land-grant and research school that U.S. News & World Report ranked 53rd among national universities and 17th among public schools in 2011. The oldest and largest university in Florida, the school serves the academic needs of over 50,000 students each year through its 16 colleges. These include the College of Design, Construction and Planning, Warrington College of Business Administration, College of Fine Arts and Levin College of Law. The colleges offer more than 100 undergraduate majors, nearly 200 graduate programs and five professional degree programs.

Ranked 47th among the top universities in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2011, the University of Miami (UM) is currently the highest-ranked school in the state in the national universities category. UM is a private research institution that consists of 12 colleges, which offer 180 undergraduate and graduate programs to over 15,000 students a year. Noteworthy features include the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, a nationally renowned medical research facility. Among the university's five locations are the main Coral Gables, Richmond, Rosenstiel and South campuses; the school also has a designated medical campus.
