In order for students to become a practicing counselor or therapist, they must have a bachelor's degree in a psychology. Students may choose to focus in one area such as clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, family psychology, school psychology, social psychology or educational psychology. They must also meet other state requirements such as obtaining a license to practice.
