1. Boston University in Boston, MA
Boston University (BU) was also included in the top 50 graduate psychology programs in 2009 by U.S. News and World Report. BU's Department of Psychology offers a master's degree program that requires eight courses. Students can pursue studies in the areas of brain, behavior and cognition or developmental psychology, or they can choose coursework based on their specific interests. Courses in the clinical psychology program, for example, are offered in psychological research methods, cognition, psychological statistics, neuropsychology and psychopathology. A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is available with concentrations in clinical psychology and developmental science, as well as in brain, behavior and cognition. A Master of Arts (M.A.) in Psychology is also offered to those interested.
2. Harvard University in Cambridge, MA
In 2009, U.S. News and World Report named Harvard's graduate psychology program the third-best in the country. The publication also ranked Harvard's experimental, social, cognitive and developmental psychology programs in the top ten of each field, also in 2009. Harvard offers a Ph.D. in Psychology on two tracks: the Common Curriculum and Clinical Science. 3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranked 11th on the list of the nation's top psychology programs in the 2009 issue of U.S. News and World Report. MIT's graduate programs are in neuroscience and cognitive science. The school's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences is where graduate psychology students take their courses and conduct their research, mostly with a scientific focus on the nature of the human brain. This unique approach to the study of psychology is more rigorously scientific, but it focuses on the cutting edge of the field, with specific areas of study including cognitive neuroscience, molecular and cellular neuroscience and systems neuroscience.
