Top U.S. Medical Schools
1. Harvard University in Boston, MA
Harvard University was ranked first among best colleges in 2011 by U.S. News and World Report. Harvard Medical School also ranked number one as a medical research institution and 15th for primary care by U.S. News and World Report in 2011.
This 4-year private university serves roughly 21,000 students more than half of whom are pursing graduate studies or advanced programs in medicine or law. The Division of Medical Sciences offers Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in biological and biomedical sciences, immunology, neuroscience and virology. The medical education program, which leads to a Medical Doctor (M.D.), is another option at Harvard Medical School.
2. Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR
Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) is a hospital designed for teaching purposes combined with a center for medical research dating back to 1887. It is divided into five different schools including the School of Medicine, which was ranked third best in the nation in 2011 by U.S. News and World Report for education in primary medical care.
The School of Medicine features 1,750 faculty that serve about 1,200 students divided between 497 M.D. students and 688 graduate students every year. The school offers 25 academic programs including a M.D., a Ph.D., a Master of Science (M.S.) and several other specific graduate programs. Examples of subject areas of these programs are biomedical informatics, cancer biology and medical physics.
3. University of Washington in Seattle, WA
The School of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW Medicine) ranked number one in 2011 as a primary care training institution by U.S. News and World Report. This top medical school also ranked number six for medical research making it a strong overall choice for aspiring medical students.
Qualifying students pursue the M.D. program or graduate medical education, including a Ph.D. program in biomedical research. Undergraduate programs in bioengineering, medical technology, neurobiology rehabilitation medicine and clinical health services are offered through the UW Medicine program. There is also a physician's assistant program at UW Medicine known as the MEDEX/PA program.
