1. Harvard University in Boston, MA
Harvard University was ranked first among best colleges in 2011 by U.S. News & World Report. In the same year, Harvard Medical School also ranked number one as a medical research institution and 15th for primary care, as designated by USN&WR.
This 4-year private university serves roughly 21,000 students, with more than half pursuing graduate studies or advanced programs in medicine or law. The Division of Medical Sciences offers Ph.D. programs in biological and biomedical sciences, immunology, neuroscience and virology. The medical education program, which leads to an M.D., is another option at the Harvard Medical School.
2. Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR
The Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) is a teaching hospital and medical research center that includes the School of Medicine. As of 2011, the school was ranked third-best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for education in primary medical care. The School of Medicine has 1,750 faculty members that serve about 1,200 students, including roughly 497 M.D. and 688 graduate students every year. Among the school's 25 academic programs are those that lead to a Master of Science (M.S.), an M.D. or a Ph.D.; areas of study include biomedical informatics, cancer biology and medical physics.
3. University of Washington in Seattle, WA
In 2011, the School of Medicine at the University of Washington (UW Medicine) ranked number one among primary care training institutions by U.S. News & World Report. This top medical school also ranked number six for medical research, making it a strong overall choice for aspiring medical students. Graduate students can pursue an M.D., a Ph.D. in Biomedical Research or the MEDEX/PA program for physician's assistants. Undergraduate programs in bioengineering, medical technology, neurobiology rehabilitation medicine and clinical health services are also offered through the UW Medicine program.
