The 4 schools offering paramedic training programs in Alaska are each part of the University of Alaska and lead to associate's degrees. All programs include a clinical experiences component, which may be structured as an internship. Admission to some programs is competitive. At least one programs allows students to complete general education courses online. Programs may be completed in less than two years.

Career Requirements

For licensing, Alaska requires proof of graduation from a paramedic training program, as well as a passing score in the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) examination. Internship training is also required, though not if the individual has already been licensed in another state. Graduates of the programs profiled below are prepared to take the NREMT exam.


Kenai Peninsula College

Kenai Peninsula College has 4 campus locations, with an Associate of Applied Science in Paramedical Technology program offered at the school's Kenai River Campus in Soldotna. Graduates of this program meet the requirements set by the U.S. Department of Transportation National Standards for Paramedics. The clinical portion of this program has students working in hospitals under the supervision of a trained professional, and an attempt is made to pair students with the location of their choice. Finally, students can take the general courses for this program online or on campus.

Matanuska-Susitna College

Associated with the University of Alaska Anchorage, Matanuska-Susitna College is located in Palmer. Aspiring paramedics can earn an Associate of Applied Science in Paramedic Technology. The program is 68 credits in length, with 48 credits in major requirements. Requirements include 3 clinical rotations and 3 paramedicine courses. Students also participate in an internship. The internship allows students to get experience working in helicopters, fixed wing aircraft, and ambulances. This program uses a ranking system for admission, which is competitive.

UAF Community and Technical College

Individuals interested in becoming paramedics can earn an Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services with a concentration in emergency medicine through the Paramedic Academy program at the UAF Community and Technical College in Fairbanks. The degree program can be finished in about 5 semesters, with focus on the major occurring in the last 3 semesters. The first of the last three semesters combines lectures and skills labs; in the second semester, students add 16 hours a week in clinical rotations. The third semester includes 480 hours spent in a field internship. Students study cardiac, respiratory, and nervous systems. Additionally, medical emergencies involving trauma, geriatrics, and pediatrics are covered in this program.

Students who pursue the Associate of Applied Science in Paramedicine program at this university in Fairbanks earn 69-73 credits to complete the program. In the Paramedic Academy at the university's College of Rural and Community Development, students complete 250 clinical hours and 500 classroom hours. Students can spend time in intensive care units, respiratory therapy, emergency rooms, and operating rooms.
