Transmission Courses and Classes
Transmission courses prepare students to install, remove, maintain and repair this system in an automobile. Students usually take such courses as part of a full certificate or degree program.
Transmission courses can be found in automotive transmission and transaxle certificate programs that take around one year to complete, as well as in specialized programs on automatic or manual transmissions. While these programs can qualify students to repair transmissions, those who want to be able to repair other auto systems can choose to complete a two-year associate's degree program in automotive technology, which includes some transmission courses. All of these programs are most often found at technical schools and community colleges.
Courses taken in a transmission certificate program may cover automatic transmissions, automobile technology, electrical systems, transmission repair, electronic diagnosis and professional communication. Students in these courses learn about transmission and transaxle installation, maintenance, replacement and repair, as well as become familiarized with auto shop safety, regulation and communication techniques. They learn to diagnose and repair issues affecting a vehicle's electrical components and electronic issues that affect the transmission.
Individuals pursuing an automotive technology associate's program also learn about brake systems, engine repair, steering and suspension systems, climate control systems and auto instrumentation. Students generally receive some form of hands-on training in all of these programs.
Overview of Transmission Courses
Below are descriptions of some related coursework included in a transmission or automotive technology program.
Automatic Transmission Course
This course introduces students to transmissions, transaxles and transmission services. It also discusses transmission theory as well as the maintenance of a vehicle's transmissions and transaxles. Minor transmission repairs are also introduced.
Transmission Repair Course
Students expand their knowledge of transmission repair to include automatic transmission removal and installation in this course, which also discusses hydraulic system operations and diagnosis. The transmission repair course also covers reaction units, oil pumps, gear trains and shafts.
Automobile Technology Course
This introductory course in automotive technology covers automobile terminology and safety concepts; concepts are expressed in such a way that students will be able to build upon then in advanced classes. Lessons also discuss workflow at an auto shop, as well as the legal and ethical issues for transmission service.
Electric Systems Course
This course discusses electricity as it relates to automotive transportation. Students learn how to diagnose issues within an automobile's electrical system, particularly in relation to the car's gauges and warning lights. In addition, the class covers repairs to lighting systems, windshield wipers and horns.
Electronic Diagnosis Course
As one of the last courses taken in most transmission programs, this option draws on all material learned throughout the program. Students apply their electrical knowledge to repairing transmission, electric and hydraulic issues in automobiles. By the conclusion of this course, future transmission technicians are able to diagnose and repair virtually any problem with automatic transmissions.
A course in communications can help a transmission specialist enhance his or her marketability. Auto workers must be able to explain their expertise in layman's terms so that customers can better understand their own transmission problems and the work being performed. The course also teaches proper report-filing techniques so that transmission mechanics are better organized for business. Communications courses are usually found in associate degree transmission programs.
