List of Travel Agency Schools and Universities in the U.S.
Travel agents help clients find affordable travel packages and book airline tickets and hotel accommodations. Travel agencies prefer applicants who have some formal education in the field of travel and tourism. Two degree options exist for prospective students who wish to enter into the field. These include an associate's degree and a bachelor's degree in travel and tourism.
How to Choose a Travel Agency School or University
The first decision in choosing a travel agency school or university involves deciding between the two degree options that exist for this career path. Prospective students who want to learn the basics of travel and tourism but not invest too much time or money may prefer the associate's degree option. Associate's degrees in travel and tourism take two years to complete. General education courses are required and many of these classes are taken during the first year of enrollment.
Some of the core classes found in an associate's degree program in travel and tourism include hospitality law, travel agency management, customer service, salesmanship and marketing management. Some classes also address Internet and computer literacy as well as interpersonal communication skills. Communication skills are essential to travel agents because they must build a rapport with clients that is based upon trust and knowledge of the industry.
In contrast, a bachelor's degree in travel and tourism takes four year of full-time study to complete. A bachelor's degree program is designed for prospective students interested in travel and tourism management positions. Training focuses on building critical reasoning skills as well as management and communication skills. Upper-level courses focus on such topics as marketing, management and recreation and leisure studies. Some of the core courses required for the bachelor's degree include organizational behavior, consumer behavior, travel and tourism principles, conference and event planning and commercial recreation.
Internships and school location are also important considerations that prospective travel and tourism student must take into account before committing to a program. For example, a university or community college that is located in a common tourist destination, such as Florida or California, may offer a wider variety of internships, as well as increased employment opportunities after graduation.
