Located 18 miles south of Troy, Wayne State University resides on a 200-acre campus in Detroit. Extension centers are maintained throughout the metropolitan area and southeast Michigan. The university's 13 academic colleges and schools offer a comprehensive set of programs in various departments, such as business, education, engineering, art, law and health sciences. With 30 different certificate, professional and specialist programs available, students may also choose from 126 bachelor's, 139 master's and 60 doctoral degree programs. Wayne State University is Michigan's only urban research university, and some of the research activity is in child and family development, molecular medicine and genetics, bioengineering, social work, manufacturing and cancer.

Oakland Community College in Bloomfield Hills
Of Michigan's 28 community colleges, Oakland Community College is the largest with five campuses and two off-campus sites located throughout Oakland County. More than 100 associate degree and 45 certificate programs are offered in a range of disciplines, such as criminal justice, accounting, landscape design and paralegal studies. Located six miles west of Troy, the college serves students from over 80 different countries and hosts the state's largest program in English as a second language. The school's programs in workforce development and nursing are also the largest of their kind in Michigan. Oakland Community College is part of a program that offers tuition waivers for unemployed or low-paid workers, and it's designed to foster job and career training.

Macomb Community College in Warren
Macomb Community College, situated about eight miles southeast of Troy, offers nearly 200 associate degree and certificate programs. Some of the school's diverse areas of study include biotechnology, German language, marketing, philosophy and pastry arts. Students may also work towards bachelor's and master's degrees in nearly 50 areas through partnerships with Michigan's leading universities and colleges, such as Wayne State University and Oakland University. The school has continuing education, personal development and professional education programs in place. Macomb Community College offers several economic and workforce development programs including police, fire and emergency medical services training.
