Ultrasound School Options in Dallas, TX

El Centro College is the only public school in the Dallas, Texas, area that offers ultrasound training, also called diagnostic medical sonography (DMS). Programs at El Centro College

DMS programs at El Centro College can lead to an advanced technical certificate or an Associate in Applied Science degree. Both options have an application deadline of December 31, with programs starting in June. All 34 hours of the imaging core curriculum must be completed before applying. Other program requirements include CPR certification, proof of immunizations, and a pre-admission health exam. Once accepted, students must pass drug and background screens. Graduates of either DMS program are eligible for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registration exams in abdominal, obstetrics and gynecology, and sonography principles/instrumentation.

Associate in Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

A total of 72 credit hours, including the core imaging courses, are needed to graduate from this program. Core courses provide a foundation in anatomy, physiology, math, pathophysiology, and pharmacology, in addition to patient care and health profession skills. DMS courses feature training in ultrasound principles and instrumentation, normal and abnormal physiology, and sectional anatomy, as well as teaching students how to conduct obstetrics and gynecology, abdominopelvic, and superficial structure ultrasound exams. Students gain professional experience via supervised clinical and practicum work. To provide a well-rounded education, this associate's degree program also requires classes in psychology, public speaking, writing, and the humanities.

Advanced Technical Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

This 44-credit-hour program features the same curriculum as the associate's degree but without general education courses. It's open to students who have an allied health associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in a science major, as well as the necessary background in math, anatomy, physics, and physiology.
