Associate of Applied Science in Ultrasound Technology

Ultrasound technology, or sonography, is the use of high-frequency sound waves to capture images of organs and tissues for diagnostic purposes. Associate's degree programs in the field of Ultrasound technology and training typically take two years to complete and require both classroom instruction and clinical coursework. Classes teach students how to operate and care for equipment, medical terminology, medical ethics and patient care procedures. Ultrasound program graduates are eligible to take their state's competency and certification exam for licensure. Ultrasound technicians can find employment with imaging centers, hospitals, clinics, physician's offices and laboratories.

Bachelor of Science in Ultrasound Technology

Bachelor's degree programs in Ultrasound technology provide students with the technical training needed to become diagnostic medical technicians. Coursework includes physics, biology, anatomy, medical ethics and patient assessment. Ultrasound technology curriculum is completed in classroom, laboratory and clinical settings. Some programs allow students to choose a concentration, such as obstetrics, vascular or cardiovascular ultrasound imaging. Graduates must sit for their state's competency exam in order to become licensed; Ultrasound technicians are expected to complete continuing education courses throughout their career.
