List of Ultrasound Schools and Colleges in the U.S.
Ultrasound technology is used to help diagnose and monitor medical conditions, diseases and disorders. Programs offering instruction in ultrasound are more commonly known as diagnostic medical sonography programs. Students choosing an ultrasound school should consider the types of credentials offered, possible specializations and career placement services when selecting a program.
How to Select an Ultrasound College
When choosing a school for ultrasound technology, students are likely to consider the school's career services and career placement history. Diagnostic sonography is a narrow field that qualifies students for a specific subset of jobs. Some schools may have stronger relationships with potential employers or a superior reputation that offers students an edge in finding employment.
Students should consider the types of credentials a school offers as well. Programs in diagnostic medical sonography usually culminate either in a certificate or associate's degree. Certificate programs in sonography are tailored for students who already hold a healthcare-related degree or have completed a bachelor's degree. A sonography certificate builds on a student's existing knowledge by providing a specifically tailored set of skills. Associate of Applied Science programs in ultrasound technology are intended for students who have not previously completed a degree program and who wish to work in medical sonography.
Students may also take into account available specializations within sonography when choosing a school. While all programs teach students the basics of ultrasound principles and instrumentation, some schools offer specialized programs in the use of ultrasounds for specific conditions, parts of the body or types of patients. Examples of these specializations include cardiac sonography, pediatric sonography and obstetric sonography.
