  • Grady Health System Professional Schools, located about a mile from downtown Atlanta, is a group of affiliated schools and medical centers that offers an advanced-level certificate program in ultrasound, also called diagnostic medical sonography (DMS).
  • Georgia Northwestern Technical College in Rome provides an associate's degree program in diagnostic medical sonography. Although this school is around 69 miles from central Atlanta, its low tuition and degree option may make the drive worthwhile.

Grady Health System Professional Schools

Grady's School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography was founded in 1991 and has more than 125 graduates. Admission to its advanced-level program is highly competitive, with only 10 students accepted each year. Applicants must have completed a 2-year healthcare program or have an associate's degree in another field as well as healthcare experience. Once accepted, students must pass background and drug checks; provide proof of liability insurance, required immunizations, and CPR certification; and meet health requirements. College-level coursework in anatomy, physiology, biology, medical terminology, and physics is also required prior to admission.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certificate

This 18-month ultrasound program provides students with an understanding of ultrasound procedures, protocols with patients and ethical standards. DMS specializations covered are abdominal and obstetrics/gynecology. Students learn through a combination of classroom-based study, laboratory simulation work and clinical rotations both at Grady and its partner sites in Atlanta. Throughout the program, students hone their skills in identifying both normal and abnormal anatomy while studying ultrasound images.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College

The healthcare programs at this college, including the diagnostic sonographer program, are provided through the Health Technologies Division. DMS program prerequisites include college-level courses and labs in anatomy, physiology, and physics with a minimum grade of C. There are also general education prerequisites such as college-level algebra, public speaking, and composition. Applicants to the program must be at least 18 years old, pass a drug test and criminal background check, and submit a health report form.

Associate of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

This degree program offers a combination of classroom and clinical instruction for learning adult, fetal, and pediatric sonography. Topics include obstetrical and pelvic, vascular, abdominal, and specialized diagnostic imaging procedures, with a focus on problem-solving and developing judgement skills. Clinical work experience in a clinic, hospital or other medical facility provides the opportunity to refine imaging techniques and work directly with real patients.
