Ultrasound Degree Programs in Michigan

The most common program available in diagnostic medical sonography awards an associate degree, though one can earn a bachelor's degree as well. These programs provide topical information and clinical experience while preparing students to take the credential examination offered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Passing this exam qualifies a sonographer to practice as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, which can make a candidate more attractive to potential employers.

Baker College

Baker College offers its two-year diagnostic medical sonography program at the school's campuses in Auburn Hills and Owosso. Through classroom and clinical training, students learn how to properly use ultrasound equipment and to utilize knowledge gained in anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology courses to read images. Graduates are awarded an Associate of Applied Science and will have the skills needed to seek entry-level employment in the field. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) has accredited this program.

Delta College

University Center's Delta College offers two ultrasound programs, both of which are accredited by CAAHEP. The advanced certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography takes 73-74 credits to complete. The program offers students both classroom and clinical experience, along with courses in the major types of sonography students will encounter, such as abdominal and OB/GYN sonography. The Associate in Applied Science program in diagnostic medical sonography covers the same courses as the certificate program, but also includes coursework in patient care, vascular ultrasound and medical ethics. Both programs prepare students to sit for the national certification exam administered by ARDMS.

Ferris State University

The Associate in Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Ferris State University, located in Big Rapids, includes coursework in pathophysiology of abdominal organs, cross-sectional anatomy, sonographic interpretation and hemodynamics. In addition, students perform lab work in the different types of sonography. The program also includes a clinical component to help students gain hands-on experience. This program is accredited by CAAHEP.

Grand Valley State University

Allendale's Grand Valley State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. After completing general coursework, students choose to specialize in one of three fields: general (abdominal and obstetrics/gynecology), adult or pediatric echocardiography, or adult echocardiography and vascular sonography. Topics covered include pathophysiology, Medical ethics, ultrasound physics and other topics. Students complete clinical rotations. This program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS).

Jackson Community College

In Jackson, students at this community college can earn an Associate in Applied Science in general, vascular or cardiac sonography. The admission process for these programs is competitive, and the college stresses that completing all of the prerequisites does not necessarily guarantee admission. These programs entail a combination of lectures, lab work and clinical experience.

Lake Michigan College

Lake Michigan College, located in southwest Michigan in Benton Harbor, offers an Associate in Applied Science program in diagnostic medical sonography. Coursework includes classes in abdominal, OB/GYN and vascular sonography, as well as sonography labs and clinical experience. Though this program is in the process of becoming accredited, qualified graduates can still take the ARDMS certification exam.

Lansing Community College

Located in Lansing, Michigan's state capitol, this community college awards an Associate in Applied Science to graduates of the schools's diagnostic medical sonography program. This program, which is accredited by CAAHEP, has limited openings, and students are admitted in the summer. Students are eligible to take national certification exams upon graduation. Students complete coursework such as abdominal sonography and OB/GYN sonography, as well as participate in clinical experience at local medical facilities.

Oakland Community College

Bloomfield Hills' Oakland Community College offers an Associate in Applied Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Admittance to this program is competitive, with preference given to those students who complete their prerequisites first. Prerequisites include general education courses and basic ultrasound courses. Grade point average is also taken into account. Once admitted, students complete the clinical portion of their program at local healthcare settings. CAAHEP has accredited this program.
